Are you a 'shoes on' or a 'shoes off' household?

We are strictly shoes off. We walk around in bare feet and I hate the thought of walking in outside dirt all over the house. MIL is coming to stay this weekend. She hates having to take her shoes off and there's this alwau this awkward moment at the front door when I ask her to take her shoes off (even though everyone else is doing so, so she should really just follow suit). She believes that floors should be hoovered/mopped every day anyway so why does it matter.....oh if only I had the time to clean every day - my cleaner does it once a week and that's it!

So I was just wondering if I was a bit OCD or if this is the norm?

Totally doesn't bother me what others do. However I tend to walk round myself without shoes on. It does get commented on a work not infrequently, although I'm rather surprised that a certain person hasn't pinched my shoes yet.
I'm ready for it. I have a spare pair in the car, and I will just apparently go without shoes. Nothing worse than a joke falling flat. Grin

feelinghopeful2 · 27/11/2019 18:55

Def shoes off as soon as we come through the door for me and the children. DH does however keep his on until bedtime, maybe he's planning on doing a runner?🤷🏻‍♀️😬

Shoes off, if a visitor didn’t want to take them off then they wouldn’t be allowed in:

Shoes off, definitely.

PIL’s house is a shoes-on one. The carpets are filthy. I used to always take my shoes off there, as a matter of habit and course. However, I’ve stopped bothering recently, as I think the floors are dirtier than my shoes! Envy

@Whiteroverbaby - Yes I let my DS crawl on grass but I didn't let him crawl on a public toilet floor where the bottom of people shoes have been, as Well as a whole lot of other germs

I laughed out loud at this Grin. Do you have any idea about what you will find on grass? Lots of dogs and cats prefer urinating and defeating on grass. Many other animals will have also gone on any grass you encounter. So basically, the grass is probably every bit as bad, if not worse, than a public toilet floor.

A quick question - do you wear special footwear in your bathroom/toilet? If not, given the spray pattern when you flush, you're traipsing all those germs through the whole house.

I actually do Grin

Soes on, hang on...(gets bucket...barf, bleurrgh etc) is rank. Dog mess, spit (and other bodily fluids) and fag ends trod in the house, er no thanks.🤢🤢

Total no brainer, it has to be Shoes Off.

IdentifyasTired · 27/11/2019 20:46

I’ll go one further. We are a shoes off household. I have slippers that I wear downstairs that I remove at the top of the stairs. Bare feet/socks only in the bedrooms.
However I would never ask a guest to remove their shoes. I’m always pleased if they volunteer to do this, but I would never ask.
DH and I are virtually hermits though so human, adult, non-familial guests are a rarity in our house.

Whiteroverbaby · 27/11/2019 21:01

We have artificial grass which I keep clean, and I have no pets. And I always put my toilet seat down before flushing.

Thehouseintheforest · 27/11/2019 21:11

We are a half- Thai house (ex is from Thailand.... ) I couldn't wear shoes in the house......

MrsApplepants · 27/11/2019 21:13

Shoes off to go upstairs, where it’s carpet, downstairs is all hard floors so I don’t much care. Life’s too short and all..

KeepYourCup · 27/11/2019 21:13

Shoes off, but mainly because I rent and the carpets are light-coloured. I dont want a massive bill for carpet cleaning when I leave.

I don't ask occassional visitors to take their shoes off, but I don't keep mine on.

whyamidoingthis · 27/11/2019 21:15

Do you really think no cat, rodent, bird etc has ever urinated or defecated on the grass or do you wash it every single time before you let your child down on it?

And do you really never allow your child crawl on any outside surface other than your artificial grass?

If that is the case, I feel sad for your child. Feeling and exploring different textures and environments is so important to their development. Also, from a health perspective, exposure to germs reduces the likelihood of allergies.

Fair enough on the toilet seat. I do the same.

Musicalmistress · 27/11/2019 21:15

Shoes off - DD3 & I are barefoot year round, DD1 & DS like socks but OH hates the feel of both barefoot & socks so has a cheap pair of indoor trainers lol

Pipandmum · 27/11/2019 21:18

I don't care unless they are muddy. I was brought up that if you took your shoes off then slippers went on. I like wearing cosy slippers now. But frankly couldn't care less if you have shoes on or off. I notice most of the kids visiting take them off as soon as they come in so I must be the minority.

Alez · 27/11/2019 21:21

Shoes off. I always ask visitors too, though it's annoying how some people can come round regularly and still not remember. Doubly shoes off if going upstairs on the light coloured carpet! I don't really understand why anyone would wear shoes inside. We wear shoes outside because it's dirty and wet, why bring it inside.

adaline · 27/11/2019 21:23

Shoes off - I think wearing shoes indoors is unhygienic, plus I'm convinced it wears the carpets faster.

Whiteroverbaby · 27/11/2019 21:24

@whyamidoingthis
I am amused why you find what I do with my grass so interesting Smile
Please Don't feel sorry for my child, he has the best life I can possibly give him (other than crawling on concrete, slabs and rocks) I will sit him down when he's older and explain why he missed out of this.
I'm glad you agree with the toilet seat down

gothefcktosleep · 27/11/2019 21:34

Shoes off. Mostly for comfort, but also the dirt. I think it looks uncomfortable when people sit in the living room wearing shoes.

My PIL are old and don’t like to take their shoes off because it’s a faff and we don’t have a seat for them to sit on when they do it so I just shrug it off. I don’t ask people to take their shoes off though... most people offer though and I appreciate that...

GoGoLego · 27/11/2019 21:36

Shows off but only recently since we had some new flooring in. Although we do wear slippers

Could you not compromise buy her some slippers for your house

whyamidoingthis · 27/11/2019 21:39

@Whiteroverbaby - I am amused why you find what I do with my grass so interesting

I'm not interested in your grass per se. I'm just mildly bemused that you seem to think that grass can actually be kept clean given that it's outside and nature lives outside.

Yeahnahyeah1 · 27/11/2019 21:41

Shoes off!! We live on a farm ffs 😂

Whiteroverbaby · 27/11/2019 21:44

@whyamidoingthis
I don't think it can be kept clean. The topic is 'shoes on or shoes off' - shoes off definitely. Germs, germs germs.

KittyMarmalade · 27/11/2019 21:46

Shoes off. But I would never ask anyone to take theirs off, unless they were muddy.
