Question about booking hotel room

When booking a hotel room for 2 adults and 1 under 2 do you have to have a family room?

Doing a search online putting in the above details mean that only family rooms sleeping 3 come up but we don’t need the third bed.

Are you not meant to book just for the amount of beds you need?

Just tuck the little one between you in a double

I think not. I get the opposite. When I put in one adult and two teenagers, booking sites seem to want us all in bed!

If I book just for a double will they question it when we arrive with small child?

Maybe book by phone or email so you can state who’s staying and have their agreeance (is that a word?) in writing.

If you speak to them, many hotels will put a cot in the room for you.

Call and ask the best way. We use premier inn all the time but the room rate is the same so it makes no difference booking the family room. We just don't always use the extra bed.
