Hands up, who regularly gets an std test?

Every time a thread pops up about being promiscuous, someone invariably pops up and says along the lines of urrggg, I wouldn't touch with a barge pole as they must be full of diseases etc.

So regardless of how many you have, or haven't' fucked, how often do you get tested if at all?

Me. Every couple of months I get the full works of genitals, blood and mouth.

Free? Where do you have to go to get a free one?

With a smear? I've never been offered one before when I've had a smear!

WorraLiberty · 22/11/2019 17:53

It does sound a bit OTT

Do you get regularly tested for other infections and diseases OP?

Or is it just your sexual health you're particularly worried about?

gamerchick · 22/11/2019 17:56

Free? Where do you have to go to get a free one

The GUM clinic. They're very nice.

Don’t you use condoms OP? How do you catch stis unless through unprotected sex? Unless you’re in a LTR, you’d be better off using condoms.

GleamInYourEyes · 22/11/2019 18:04

Long term monogamous relationship so I don't bother.

Had a free chlamydia test once when I was under 25, but since then have only been tested in pregnancies.

JacquesHammer · 22/11/2019 18:06

Condoms are around 98% effective at preventing STIs. They don’t however protect from all STIs.

Sweetpeach3 · 22/11/2019 18:07

My best friend tested quite regularly when she was single I used to go with her as it was a monthly thing an then we went for dinner afterwards. I'm not one to judge at all and even safe sex can pass STDs
. Me personally iv been with my ex since 17 so had it done twice prior to him just to know I was all okay and since being with now "ex" I had 1 only because he slept with the local slag and I needed to be sure I had nothing as Iv got 2 kids look after don't need be having STDS an stuff from their dad not keeping it in their pants ! He's out me off for life and not been anywhere else since we split- I need some action soon though jessseeee talk about cobwebs- thought they all went with Halloween but me , nooooooo
An then when iv been pregnant they always seem to do them and for hiv and aids** an now a breath one to test carbon monoxidelevels ? But iv never actually had anything. Touch wood!!! 🙋🏼‍♀️

Outspoken82 · 22/11/2019 18:09

With every new partner.

Been with the current one long enough to not remember the last one!

Outspoken82 · 22/11/2019 18:09

(Last test that is, not sexual partner!)

titsmcghee27 · 22/11/2019 18:09

I had one during my pregnancy for the full works.
If I were to have an unprotected encounter with someone on a casual basis I would obviously test. But I don't make a habit of that now I'm a bit older! I have also tested before stopping condom use in serious relationships. I've used the home test kits before and they are incredibly simple and discreet. You do have to pay for some of them though depending on what area you're in.
Currently going through a bit of a sticky situation at the minute though as dp and I both tested for the common STIs at the beginning of our 3 year relationship but recently discovered that not all infections are routinely tested for. So I'm going to the gum clinic next week for the full works again.

NemophilistRebel · 22/11/2019 18:11

A handful of times.
Once after I was raped
Another when I left exh and met new man

I also think when pregnant the blood test check for certain STD’s too

titsmcghee27 · 22/11/2019 18:20

Since we're on the topic does anyone know anything about Trichomonas? Not routinely tested for at GPs or through home test kits but apparently very common....go figure Confused

Crunchymum · 22/11/2019 18:45

Like most NHS treatment, the tests arent charged directly to the patient but the certainly aren't free Shock

OP, given you use protection, your testing is excessive.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 19:40

Why do you get them so regularly? Because as a single person I have sex.

Do you also get tested for other illnesses or just sexual?
I really cannot believe this is being asked along with ticks etc.
Doesn't everyone get tested for illnesses at some point in their lives? Or do you mean do I ask for random tests? No, I don't.

No, I don't want a pat on the head for getting tested regularly. It's recommended when you start a new relationship to get tested before ending the condoms. The continuation of condoms after a previous clear test helps because some of the infections can take a little longer to show up.

It does sound a bit OTT
To ensure that I'm not walking around with an unknown sexual infection/disease?

Don't you use condoms? Of course. Just a shame there isn't any on the market that is 100% safe.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 19:48

Reading back through I'm wondering if some of you are just having a laugh. 🤣 Because honestly some of the responses cannot be serious.

I mean, whatever am I thinking, having sex, even protected and still go and get myself tested for various infections/diseases.

@titsmcghee27 the Trichomonas test can be bought from Superdrugs along with other online pharmacies. It's usually part of an extended kit. Cannot recall it as a standalone test.

OP posts:
Peanutbutteryogurt · 22/11/2019 19:48

I think I've only been tested when I've gone in for other issues in that area. When I first started dating my ex I was convinced I'd caught something but turned out to be thrush. I don't feel any need to go and get tested randomly.

tabulahrasa · 22/11/2019 19:52

“I really cannot believe this is being asked along with ticks etc.

But getting an STD test in case a partner of decades has cheated when you’ve no reason to suspect they have is about as random as getting a test for lime disease in case I didn’t notice a tick bite the last time I was walking somewhere with ticks...

dontalltalkatonce · 22/11/2019 19:55

Given that you pick up sex partners from supermarkets and 'around' and have sex in cinemas and toilets I don't think it's OTT that you get tested as often as you do.

titsmcghee27 · 22/11/2019 20:04

@ffswhatnext yeah unfortunately all of the extended kits I've seen are really expensive. I know I am clear of the rest as I've taken basic STI home tests but apparently trich isn't included in them

Peanutbutteryogurt · 22/11/2019 20:05

How do we know how OP picks up her partner's? I guess if you live that kind of lifestyle it's more necessary.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 20:05

@dontalltalkatonce
If you are going to bring up stuff I have posted elsewhere (and it's not like I have said I am pure on this thread lol) at least ensure you are correct.
Those were some of the places I suggested people could fuck. There were other places as well, but I'm sure you can come back and post them for everyone.

What a shock. Single female enjoys sex.

I never understand how anyone can say they have never been tested "because they are not at risk" When you sleep with someone protected or not your still risking your sexual health as nothing is 100% safe. A lot of sti's have no symptoms.

When I was single I got tested between partners regardless if I used a condom or not (not that I made a habit of sleeping around but I did tend to go for the bad lad types in my youth).

Maybe it's because I used to work in a medical centre with a GU clinic, I saw not only "single" men and women but married men and women with wedding rings on.

I asked my current partner to get tested before we slept together without protection and I also had myself tested. You can even get a postal wee service now to test for the most common sti's. I'm sure the NHS would rather a quick wee and blood test than pay for a bunch of antibiotics.

BrassTactical · 22/11/2019 20:10

Never got tested as I was with ex for years, then split and got raped and you get thrown into the barrage of tests.

Now I get tested around every 6 months? I think it’s paranoia to be honest as I use protection and haven’t slept with that many people. Have always been clean so far luckily.

I do take suppressants for cold sores (mentally linked to the rape), clinics don’t test for those, HPV and all sorts of things because everyone carries them and it’s a waste of time so it always irritates me when people go eeerrrggghhh STDs. It’s stigma only like its dirty, when a cold, or other person to person virus isn’t? Doesn’t make sense.

titsmcghee27 · 22/11/2019 20:13

Really not sure why everyone has turned so nasty towards the op. She is looking after her health, what's the issue? So many people harp on about the importance of sexual health on here yet the op is getting a real bashing. The NHS cost argument doesn't stack up as she's said she uses home tests most of which you have to pay for.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 20:14

@tabulahrasa
I'm not sure where your getting your decades from.

Do you also get tested for other illnesses or just sexual?
I really cannot believe this is being asked along with ticks etc.

Infections/diseases can have an incubation period so makes sense to test when in a relationship.
As @titsmcghee27 has posted, this is now something she is considering 3 years in because of the previous infection.

There could be other posters reading wanting to post but are put off because of some of the hysterics on here.

We should be talking about Safe Sex. That although condoms are great, they are not perfect.

A condom can break for anyone at any given time.
