Grace Millane name suppression

Just watching the news this morning about the terrible murder of Grace Millane in New Zealand. Why has her killer's name been suppressed? Does New Zealand not name suspects? If not, he has now been found guilty so why still the name suppression?

Give it time.

MyEnormousTurnip · 22/11/2019 06:48

I’ve been wondering the same myself.

Stupiddriver1 · 22/11/2019 06:50

I might be wrong but wasn’t he named initially.....right at the start? Then the name suppression thing and I’m not sure why....he’s an adult.

Maybe now he’s been found guilty it will happen but needs a court to agree to it so may take a day or two?

Kinsters · 22/11/2019 06:52

Yeah I'm sure I've seen his name and pictures of him when it first came out. I don't understand why it's suppressed.

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 22/11/2019 06:52

He's been found guilty? Oh thank god.

Piece of utter shit.

Stupiddriver1 · 22/11/2019 06:57

I’ve just asked a kiwi friend.

He represents NZ internationally in a sport....don’t know which one. So they withdrew his name as they didn’t want his “celebratory” status to influence the trial. But it’s expected to be released soon.

Sounds like everyone in nz knows who he is and the jury would have recognised him but guess it stops the media talking about him from that angle while trial is ongoing.

Fairylea · 22/11/2019 06:59

You just have to google it and his name and face is all over the internet. Must be something to do with UK laws.

Fairylea · 22/11/2019 07:00

Oh sorry cross posted with others.

EmMcK · 22/11/2019 07:00

He is a nobody who plays softball.
From my understanding, name suppression stays because he can still appeal, and name suppression can roll over till the appeal process. Initial name suppression was becuase he was facing charges on another case I think.
I am so relieved at the verdict and that it was unanimous and that the judge was so decent

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 22/11/2019 07:09

I've just gooled and yes, it's everywhere.

Stupiddriver1 · 22/11/2019 07:22

Google suggests that name suppression laws mean his name can only be suppressed in NZ. So yes, all over the internet.

Maybe it’s no bad thing, he’s a worthless bit of shit who doesn’t deserve to have photos of him in the press, etc.

I liked what their prime minister said at the time of the terror attack that she would never say the terrorists name but would focus on the victims.

BethanyGilbert · 22/11/2019 07:23

I’ve googled it and can’t find anything. Am I doing it wrong?

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 22/11/2019 07:30

@BethanyGilbert just google who killed Grace millane and it should take long...

I agree with the name suppression for the same reason Jacinda didn’t name the man who carried out the Christchurch attack as a poster mentions upthread. Also for the jury unless they looked him up on the internet before the trial their decision was based purely on the evidence in court.

Starksforthewin · 22/11/2019 07:54

I am utterly delighted that this piece of shit has been found guilty of murder.

His defence team should be ashamed. Well done the jury for seeing through the ‘rough sex gone wrong’ defence. There should have been no place in testimony for ex partners of Grace to discuss their sex lives. The defence was trying to blame Grace for her own murder.

I hope he rots in prison and suffers every day of his miserable life.

Mlou32 · 22/11/2019 08:26

He doesn't nor has he ever represented NZ internationally at sport. He was a loser who sailed through life bumming off one person after the other. Spinning lies and stories to get through life.

I took an interest in that story last year because I had done the same backpacking trip as Grace and remember thinking how it could have been me or any of the other girls and women that i had met on my travels that this could have happened to.

I don't think NZ has a blanket ban on suspects being named otherwise the judge wouldn't have had to make an order telling the media not to name him in the first place. I think it was because it was becoming so high profile and that could prejudice the jury. I'm not sure though. However if you want to know his name, it's all over the internet and how much of a creep this guy was.

That poor family, they'll never get over this. I just hope the trial and this animal being put away has given them some closure.

Sq3333 · 22/11/2019 08:29

He had to apply for name suppression several times, and I think the reason for it being granted is also suppressed.

Tortoiser · 22/11/2019 08:38

The BBC has this on their piece about the verdict today :

Why can we not name the killer?
In New Zealand's court system, the accused and victims can ask to have their name suppressed, which means it becomes illegal to publish it in newspapers, online or anywhere else.
The purpose is to protect people not yet proven guilty - but also to have a fairer trial by ensuring the jury is not prejudiced by media coverage.
Images can also be withheld.
Justice Simon Moore ordered that the suppression order which prevents naming the defendant would remain in place

Tortoiser · 22/11/2019 08:39

Justice Simon Moore ordered that the suppression order which prevents naming the defendant would remain in place indefinitely until lifted by the court.

Tortoiser · 22/11/2019 08:39

And thank god for a guilty verdict.

NaturalBornWoman · 22/11/2019 09:00

I thought the suppression order was about avoiding trial by media, but today I'm reading that the reason is also suppressed. I'm wondering if he's accused of something else?

Thank God for the verdict. I was very concerned she was going to be blamed for her own murder.

Stupiddriver1 · 22/11/2019 10:37

Some of my Kiwi friend's other FB friends have said there's a lot of rumors that he's potentially facing other charges, rape, etc. And the suppression order to do with that.

Stupiddriver1 · 22/11/2019 10:39

How awful for Grace's family to have to listen to all the shit as he tried to drag her name through the mud. Taking the photos of her body, arranging a date the following day with someone else........hardly paints the picture of an awful accident.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 22/11/2019 10:41

Thank goodness sense prevailed and some shred of justice for poor Grace has been done. I was sure in this day and age he was going to get away with it. RIP beautiful girl.
