I'm not "passionate" about anything really... Are you?

I was watching a Tony Robbins video where a couple were having marital problems. Tony said "rediscover your wife! What is she passionate about?" . In another clip he then mentioned Mother Teresa "and I asked her 'what are you passionate about?'" (she was passionate about people dying with a smile on their face as a creepy aside). So that got me thinking - I'm not passionate about anything. I love my DC. I like a clean house. I'm happy to do a bit of yoga, sew, read a bit and chat with friends. My job is enjoyable for the most part. My DH is passionate about the area he works in but that doesn't really pay the bills. I feel like I haven't got the energy to be passionate. I don't mean that in a martyr way. Just... I'm happy to tootle along, make a bit of money, pay my bills, I'd like more free time to chill out. But passion? Not really.

Am I the only one? Is everyone else passionate about something?

No. I like things. But I'm not so into anyone hobby that I couldn't stop it, or so into an idea about life that it has become an overriding drive. Some people are very focused. Others aren't. It's probably more common NOT to have 'a passion'.

KittenLedWeaning · 21/11/2019 22:43

It's just one of those modern buzz words that's overused. People think it makes them sound more interesting if they say they're 'passionate' about something rather than merely enjoying it.

Pinkbonbon · 21/11/2019 22:45

Not really. Sometimes I'll get really into a cute actor and have to watch everything they star in...also love Korean dramas...in part because the actors are gorgeous too though xD

Hmm..game of thrones when it was on. Occasionally a video game like red dead redemption because it's so beautiful.

That's about it. I'm 'meh' about pretty much everything.

JuneSpoon · 21/11/2019 22:52

I enjoy GOT too. And other series on Netflix. Not sure how Tony Robbins would rate me being passionate about Keanu Reeves Grin.

If my DH was asking Tony Robbins for advice then came to me and said "June what are you passionate about?" I'd probably say "meh" too.

Nah. Have recently finished teacher training and everyone was expected to be deeply passionate about it all.
Probably in the hope that would carry them past the rubbish conditions and the stress.

Pinkbonbon · 21/11/2019 22:57

I'm passionate about sleeping xD .and pizza when the mood takes me.

I actually wish there was more I was passionate about. Maybe I could make a living out of it lol. Feel like I just coast through life. Figure that's better than having dreams that could be crushed I guess. Maybe. Meh xD

Ah.
Thought this was going to be a thread suggesting new slogans for Melania to have daubed on the back of her coat.

Evilmorty · 21/11/2019 23:01

I am not passionate until an idea takes me and then I am very passionate about it until it wears off.

Ancestry is the current one.

EauDeResistance · 21/11/2019 23:03

I'm passionate about music. I love going to live gigs and seeing talented people doing what they love. It makes my heart soar.

I realise how cheesy that sounds but it's my 'thing'.

AgeLikeWine · 21/11/2019 23:24

I am a passionate supporter of the England cricket team. I never cry at anything, but I cried when we won the World Cup last summer in the greatest game of white-ball cricket ever played.

Things are now back to normal, as I am currently watching our batting collapsing against New Zealand. There is a comforting normality to this Smile

Sleeping

Your post resonates OP. I have no 'fire in my belly.' I still don't know what I want to be, now I'm grown up. Sad

ShippingNews · 22/11/2019 01:53

No, I've never had that passion which people talk about. I like a lot of things, but I've never been passionate about anything.

Tupster · 22/11/2019 02:04

No, I've often asked myself this same question when I see people on MasterChef or similar programmes going on about their passion for seasonal vegetables. I just like things. And even when I have a slight craze for something it doesn't reach passion levels and usually only lasts a couple of weeks!

managedmis · 22/11/2019 02:06

Another non passionate one here.

Sure I like stuff, but passion? Give me a break

dontlickthelamp · 22/11/2019 02:08

Another one here. I like things but I’ve never had a special hobby or passion, when I was younger people tried to make me take up a hobby but I was never interested in something to persevere.

c75kp0r · 22/11/2019 02:21

If he just means listening while she drones on about trains or her knitting, then fair enough - has to be done, innit.

If he means manipulating someone by using their near-addiction to something, then that is not ok and makes me go all puritan and think passions are a weakness and indulgence to be avoided. Having interests might be more healthy than having passions?

Bimbop5 · 22/11/2019 02:25

I've never really been passionate about anything until i started roller skating!

Mediumred · 22/11/2019 02:34

Where I work loads of people (mainly but not wholly men) are absolutely fanatical about cycling and clog up the bike shed (I say the bike shed but it’s an entire underground floor of a big office block) with their seven different bikes that they are always tinkering with. I cycle to work and do appreciate its eco/financial/fitness credentials but really it’s just a way to get from a to b. I kinda wish I was interested in torque or stavia or summat but I’m not, I’m not even sure what they are!!!

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 22/11/2019 02:36

Friends describe me as passionate spirited

Books, the Peak District, music, brexit, justice, sunsets, starry skies, the moon. I react mind, body and soul to all of these things.

I'm fiery and probably on the spectrum with very clear views on right and wrong.

I like pizza, baking, chocolate and cups of tea but they don't stir my soul.

loubieloo4 · 22/11/2019 02:52

The moon, starry skies, the northern lights, empty vast beaches! I love lying on the beach looking at the moon and the stars listening to the waves. It makes me happy

Aquamarine1029 · 22/11/2019 03:23

Not everyone of course, but in my experience, I have found that many people deeply "passionate" about whatever tend to be inherently selfish people. Their "passion" takes priority over the people in their lives. They lose all sense of perspective about what really matters.

TheMasterBaker · 22/11/2019 07:49

I don't have any hobbies or interests really but I'd say I'm passionate about dogs, music and food. I am obsessed with dogs and I really enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes and things. I love music, I am always listening to music and singing. I wish I had a hobby or something I was passionate about though. I have a short attention span and will get really into something for a few months but it fizzles out.
Ooh actually, DIY. I love DIY, I've finished my house but we've just sold and moving to our new house in about a month and I have many projects planned already that I can't wait to start.

PegHughes · 22/11/2019 08:53

I have sometimes pondered this. I have lots of interests/subjects that I'm fascinated by but I'm not sure if any of them would count as passions.

Maybe something that has stood the test of time? I mean, I've adored Lipizzaner horses since I was about 7 or 8 and I've read a lot about them but I've never visited the Spanish Riding School or Piber or the Lipica Stud which I imagine a true devotee would have done by now.

I learned to knit when I was a similar age and still like to knit nowadays, but I can leave projects half done for months.

Perhaps reading is the closest I get to a passion. But even there I read 50-ish books a year on average, whereas the booktube/Goodreads people that I see online rack up 150 plus.

I suspect that I'm just not one of the world's passionate people.
