Anyone ever been falsely reported to HMRC?

I'm just curious really. It happened to my family years ago when my mum was reported for apparently still living with and being married to my dad - eight years after they divorced and fives years after my dad remarried and was living in a totally different town with his wife.

Anyone else have any wild stories of false reports? Why do people make these ridiculous claims?

People snitch out of jealousy I'm sure. Someone reported me because my children's father was coming round at 6:30 and putting his 3 kids to bed then leaving. Whoever saw him turn up obviously didn't see him leave at 8:30 every night.

I don’t know if we were reported by someone but a few years ago we had letters from them saying they didn’t believe that our youngest daughter was living with us!
She was 2 years old and I don’t think she had ever been away from us for more than a couple of hours at that point. We had to get proof of her living with us (which is surprisingly hard for a toddler!) before they would reinstate tax credits.

That's the part that amazes me! Trying to get proof. With my parents, everything that showed my dad was living in a different house apparently didn't count as evidence. He had to go to the tax office himself and deal with it lol.

But yes, how do you proof a toddler's residence? Does she have utility bills? 😂

In the end we had to get letters from our doctor to say she was registered there at our address. I have no idea why they thought she wasn’t there but in one of the many phonecalls it was strongly implied that they believed she had died Hmm

Someone else is using my NI number.... I notice this & report it when I login to HMRC. Wish someone would report the person using my number!!

My ex was reported by our downstairs neighbour (we suspect) for tax avoidance due to us having lodgers at the time, many years ago. They did a full investigation of his taxes and ended up having to refund him several hundred pounds as his PAYE had been wrong all year!

Knobhead neighbour wasn't aware that you could receive lodging income tax free up to a decent threshold.

Yes. Don’t know who but someone reported that I still live with my ex. I don’t.
I had to have an interview under caution. Took his council tax bill from his address elsewhere. And never heard from them again.
