Orthodontist said dd jaw is small. Whatever they do to small Jaws may not work on her so she's suggesting surgery when she's 18!!

My sil is about to have this surgery. She’s in her 30s.

If I was in your position I would seek a second opinion to see if there is really no other option to surgery - but then I wasn’t keen on my DS undergoing surgery. I was told surgery would have been his only option to cure his overbite if he didn’t go ahead with a bite plate and fixed braces aged 14. He was adamant he didn’t want either. Me and DH overruled him so he had a bite plate then for the past two years he’s had a fixed brace (which apparently has been going on so long that “it‘s like Brexit” according to my lovely boy!)

My brother had surgery for a severe over bite and it was no walk in the park, also he looks completely different racially after the surgery as his jaw was reconstructed.

Recovery was very long, painful and problematic, we all felt awful for him. I'd certainly seek a second opinion from a maxillofacial consultant.

Conversely I have a slight over bite and small jaw (good genes in our family clearly) and had nothing done. I suffer very badly with TMD and jaw weakness that has been in part attributed to the misalignment. My teeth actually look fine, totally normal when I smile etc but the front teeth do not touch and I can't make them touch.
