Chat to me about gaming chairs

Are they just chairs? Chairs that rock? I don't understand. My 14 yr old hasn't asked for one for Christmas but I see him eyeing them up. I don't really get what they are about though.
Some of them have speakers built in but apart from that? I could just get him a bean bag.

DC has a gaming beanbag. To my elderly eye it looks like a regular beanbag with a largely unhelpful back rest. Have to say, has been used constantly over the last 3 years, although clearly not as swish as one with an actual seat and speakers.

Saw this the other day, looks great:

They also make lots of other beanbag types. The company get excellent reviews.

But what do you get extra in a 'gaming' beanbag or a 'gaming' chair compared to a normal one?

From what I've read it's either built in speakers for the expensive ones or pockets on the side to keep your juice in for the cheaper ones

Nothing in DC's case, it is just a beanbag with a back for more comfortable lolling about.

I think they are probably just chairs that are overpriced and "look cool"... DS and DH reckon a really nice desk chair is better. Probably depends if they are PC gamers or loll on bedroom floor with controller console gamers?

Boring but potentially useful.

I think the difference compared to a normal chair or beanbag BTW is that they are meant to be sat in for hours at a time, that's why office chairs are comparable.

DS's has surround sound & vibration. He can plug his headphones into it as well.

LoopyLu2019 · 20/11/2019 17:27

Gaming chairs are designed to be ergonomic and comfortable for long periods of time. They're not quite the same as ergonomic office chairs as they're more comfortable for lounging. Beware of cheap speaker/snack mountained chairs and for posture I wouldn't recommend a beanbag.

DS has this one, I was set to buy a floor rocker but he said every one he had seen at friends houses had to be stuck up against the wall/bed which defeats the purpose. I think it's like anything, you get what you pay for.

Beanbag is a bit of a novelty but I would t recommend it for a serious gamer as it won't be good for them to sit for long

DS and DH reckon a really nice desk chair is better.

But they won't have the connectivity, so not really a better alternative.

BertieBotts · 20/11/2019 18:44

It depends if you want the connectivity, I suppose. DH prefers headphones and finds the vibration a bit of a gimmick - maybe it would appeal more to a teen though.

Got 8yr old an xrocker chair for his birthday. He sits in it all the time. It folds up so can be packed away, as long as he doesn't rock too hard it is free standing. It has speakers in and you can run the game so the sound comes through the speakers.
