Addicted to my phone

I literally spend hours looking at mindless shit (including
Mumsnet!) and getting nothing done. If you were like this and managed to break the cycle how did you do it?

I was watching tv last night and suddenly realised I didn't have a clue what was going on as I had been tapping at nothing on my phone.

Help me I'm a phone addict!!

Put your phone in a drawer or zip it up in your handbag
Download the moment app and set a time limit
Remember the things you loved to do before your phone took over, and do them again. Fiddly activities, like cross stitch are good.
Have a no phones in bedrooms rule
Set time limits. Phone goes in the drawer at 9pm
There's a difference between an addiction and a habit. Habits can be hard to break, but you might be surprised how little you miss your phone once you've found other things to do.
Think how wonderful it is that, in a works where no one seems to have any time any more, you are in the lucky position of getting literally hours a week of extra time.

Best of luck! Smile

Find something you do with your hands.

Knitting, crochet (youtube is amazing for both), jigsaws, diamond painting, reading, a fiddle cube, stress ball, clay work, keeping a diary, scrapbooking etc.

Occupy your mind and your hands

I think what I need to do is delete the apps so that it turns into a dumb phone. I don't want to take up a hobby - I've got so much stuff to do, it's not I'm bored it's that I reach for the phone instead of getting on with my life. For instance, this morning I dropped the kids at school got home and instead of taking the dog straight out I sat at the table fiddling with my phone for an hour. Then I took the dog out. So instead of being completely done by 10 and having the whole day I ended up getting back just after 11 bit more phone fiddling and now it's lunchtime. I haven't even loaded the dishwasher ffs.

I became addicted to twitter. I made a stupid account and it got a lot of followers. I became addicted. I've signed out of it now. It's still active but I'm trying my best to stay away. Apps delete and sign out.. change passwords to something less memorable and write in a note book somewhere so u have to hunt for them. I actually got my housework done 4 wash loads and ironing yesterday by staying off

I've just checked my screen time. 6 hrs 15 minutes today. I'm seriously ashamed of myself.

I think I'm going to start by deleting Facebook and mumsnet (together 3 hours). Surprisingly little time spent on actually checking messages from real life people. What a waste of my life.

I started knitting! I love it! Also I am turning my phone off in the evening and try to do that at least 3 evenings a week. It's so easy to sit and stare at the bloody thing - I end up getting annoyed at myself!

BendNSnap · 20/11/2019 18:17

I'm exactly the same! Addicted to mindlessly scrolling through Mumsnet and Facebook. I'm sat here on MN on my phone instead of starting dinner! 🤦‍♀️ I've had screen time switched off because I know how much time I waste on it. I'm with you OP! I need to delete these apps!

Biggest thing for me was to turn off notifications, or at least the ping for them. Your phone trains you like a dog being clicker trained - you hear the ping, you react. Then your phone is in your hand and you're mindlessly scrolling before you know it. Break the habit.

I crochet too. Having my hands busy makes a big difference like PPs have said!

I'm still here. Arrrgggghh
