can you mark a message as not read after you've read it

I'm told if you put your phone in flight mode, go in read it close the app a nd come back out, the ticks still show as grey rather than blue.

But if you've read it, I don't think you can make it unread like an email.

But Google has lots of tips.

No, the other person will see the blue ticks to show you've read it. You can't mark as unread

If you turn off your read receipts the other person doesn’t see yours. All messages (sent and received) stay in grey ticks. You can’t do it backwards though, you’d need to change settings before reading.

I get a notification of a message. I cam pull that down to read the message without entering the app. This means it doesn't get marked as read. Not sure if that's quite what you mean though.
