I'm doing a Christmas present for ds and partner, just moving into their new home.

I need some suggestions on the line of every home should have one.

Scissors, torch, batteries, candles, first aid kit, basic sewing kit, DIY tape measure and hammer.
I'll be spending about £100 in total.

Plunger!

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 19/11/2019 14:12

Corkscrew/Bottle Opener

Collectorofcookbooks · 19/11/2019 14:13

Great idea!

Screwdriver, dustpan and brush, plunger, spare curtain hooks, stanley knife, picture hooks.

HolyGuac · 19/11/2019 14:14

Sellotape in a sellotape dispenser I used to buy rubbish ones then bought a decent circa £15 one about five years ago and I have never looked back.

toomuchfaster · 19/11/2019 14:15

IMO: bread bin, carpet cleaner, book about basics of DIY (we have the St Micheal one), shoe tidy, coat rack, knife block, sellotape, packing tape, screwdrivers (philips and flat head as minimum, a pack of tiny ones is also useful).

Some brilliant ideas. Thanks
They've both been at home until now, and obviously working ft to afford a deposit.
It's only £100 of stuff, but if it means they don't have to rush around.

Fire extinguisher for the kitchen.

Batqueen · 19/11/2019 14:17

Put together a toolkit if they don’t yet have one. Buy the tool box and then each of the tools to fill it up

DameFanny · 19/11/2019 14:18

Kitchen and bathroom clocks, nice and big, so the morning doesn't run away from you

babycatcher411 · 19/11/2019 14:19

I would suggest a basic tool kit as opposed to individual tools.

A small spirit level.

A box of mixed size screws and mixed size rawl plugs.

EyeDrops · 19/11/2019 14:19

Superglue, torch

cakeandchampagne · 19/11/2019 14:19

Duct tape & a bucket.

HollowTalk · 19/11/2019 14:20

I would love a cordless drill.

Andsoitisjust99 · 19/11/2019 14:21

Carbon monoxide detector (smoke alarm if they don’t have one), mini fire extinguisher, drain unblocker!

CalmDownConan · 19/11/2019 14:22

A bit different, but I got my mum a Waitrose food delivery so she had some basics and some treats in. She really appreciated it.

eternallybaffled · 19/11/2019 14:23

Electrical extension cords!

Simonsaysitschristmas · 19/11/2019 14:23

Teabags and sugar!

soupforbrains · 19/11/2019 14:24

Cheeseboard -definitely essential. A nice vase. I can garantee people will buy them flowers as housewarming gifts and they'll not have anywhere to put them.

but I may have my priorities a bit skewed given everyone else's suggestions are very practical.

more practically speaking, some dusters, a bucket, a shoe rack, coat hooks/stand, bread bin, kitchen roll holder, egg rack, doormat for inside to save carpets from muddy shoes.

isabellerossignol · 19/11/2019 14:24

Bucket, carbon monoxide detector, decent torch, spirit level, good screwdrivers that are easy to grip, picture hooks.

20viona · 19/11/2019 14:24

Carbon monoxide detector for sure. Spirit level!

lioness88 · 19/11/2019 14:25

Such a lovely idea! Do they have plenty of kitchen utensils, potato masher, spatulas etc?

My utility drawer has: loads of pens, basic tools (screwdriver etc), various batteries, torch, stationary (elastic bands, brown tape, stapler, superglue), matches, luggage scales, chargers, umbrellas and loads of other crap.

A faraday bag or box may be useful if they have keyless cars?

Nottobesoldseparately · 19/11/2019 14:28

Every home needs.......
a bottle opener, we have magnetic ones (and something to use it on)
A magnetic shopping list/ note pad
First aid tin
Basic tool kit
Nice plain vase (with flowers to go in it)
Key rings that you can label and somewhere to hang the fuckers, I can't believe how many keys we have for different things
Sewing kit
Clock
Hat stand

There are loads of things my house needs, but I don't think everyone would agree they are essential! Like candles, nice glasses, bubble bath etc!

BarbaraofSeville · 19/11/2019 14:28

These tool kits and other bits from Ikea are great.

I have the basic tool kit in the kitchen, so I don't have to run the gauntlet of DPs man cave if I want a hammer or a screwdriver.

DIY or basic household maintenance book if they're not already handy?

midsomermurderess · 19/11/2019 14:34

A good supply of replacement lightbulbs, screw in and bayonet, and batteries.

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 19/11/2019 14:37

Radiator bleeding key.

A welcome mat.
