Can any police officers tell me what it's really like as a career?

Obviously, it's not for everyone, there are risks and a high level of resilience must be needed but DS is keen and seems (to me) an ideal candidate in terms of his personality. What advice would you give him?

DH loves elements of it. He's had various specialist roles and done tours of the middle east for 6 months for example. Every day is different. It is a family.

The reality atm is that they are under resourced. DH never ever comes home on time, he is refused leave regularly, has rest days cancelled, is told he can't travel to various places for things like family weddings. He takes a fair amount of abuse from the general public including complaints about them drinking water in the height of summer or buying a bloody sandwich during a 14hr shift. Pays 15% into his pension which is decreasing in value and gets wise arse comments regularly about how it's gold plated. No pay rise for 6 years. And marriages break down constantly. Affairs are rife.

It's tough. He loves it but it's tough.

DH and I are both police officers. I’m just about to leave the house so can’t do a detailed post but happy for you to send me a message and I’ll respond when I’m home with our honest views!
