Depo injection causing weight gain

I I've had two lots of the Depo injection, and I've gained 4kg between the first and the second. My stomach is hard and I honestly look and feel like I'm about 6 months pregnant again. I did some googling and it turns out the depo can cause you to gain fat rather than retain water which nobody ever warned me about, I was only ever told about water retention.
Has anybody else had this? And what did you do to combat the weight gain? I really like all other aspects of the injection and so I'd rather not come off of it for a different form of contraception but I can't carry on gaining weight, I'm already overweight for my height as it is

I went on it at 17 for a year, and NEVER again. They swore i wouldnt put on weight. I went from a size 10 to at least an 18 within a year. I lost 6st after having my son and im left with more stretch marks a loose skin from that weight gain than being pregnant. Id get off it ASAP.

I've booked a doctors appointment to get off it, unfortunately I just had the second one so I'll be stuck until February but I've never felt so big in my life (apart from when pregnant 😂). I can't believe you had such a big weight gain though, a 10 to an 18 is a massive leap! I'm usually a size 10/12, post baby a 12/14 but last night my partner asked my size for Christmas presents and I had to say a 16 with how quickly I'm piling it on. Do you think I should ask about help towards a gym membership? I know they're given to people with mental health issues, and this weight gain is a medical reason. Otherwise it's going to cost me £30-40 a month which I can't really afford 😬

I think I was lucky I didn't react that way to it.

In terms of exercising to keep it off could you do at home workouts to save money? There are some great ones on YouTube

It also made me put on loads of weight. It is a known side effect (although I didnt know that at the time)

I went from a size 8/10 to an 18 within a year of being on depo.
The weight gain was so fast I had stretch marks (still do) on my thighs and arms and even my calf’s.

I lost weight very quickly when I came off it.

Never again and I would never recommend it to anyone.

I was a hormonal mess.

Yes made me gain about a stone when I was on it. Was in my mid 20s so no peri menopause to blame.

Only shifted when we moved to condoms because I kept spotting on it too.

Mind you I didn't try that hard - was in the sex and takeaway bubble of young love.

I had one injection a couple years ago but don't remember gaining weight, although I was in the young love stage and eating pizza every week so I might have put it down to that 😂 I was definitely a hormonal mess though which is why I came off of it but after the baby I just wanted something quick that I didn't have to remember every day and I was too sore for the coil (almost passed out when they took a swab 🙊). This time hormones have been great but bloody weight gain has been awful.
Can't do home work outs unfortunately as I live in an upstairs flat and I'm having noise issues with downstairs making too much/it travelling so easily so don't want to be a dick and make loads for them, especially when they already hear my crying baby all day and night. I'll pay the gym membership if I have to but if I can get help that would be great, I guess it's unlikely though.
It's shocking that they don't warn women against this side effect, I can handle water retention because I guess in my mind that's easier to sort out but actual fat is horrible and I've always struggled shifting weight. I'd rather have suffered through the coil being inserted than this I think

I've been on it for 14 years - have gained, lost, gained, lost, gained, lost weight depending on what I've eaten. I don't think the Depo has had much effect if any.

Doubleraspberry · 19/11/2019 21:28

I gain weight with any progesterone-based contraception. Depo was dreadful. I have a copper coil now so am hormone free (apart from my own).
