A Royal Referendum - How would you vote?

Nikhedonia · 19/11/2019 01:22

I know that this wouldn't be how it would work, but please humour me Smile

If there was a referendum where the options were to either keep the Royal Family or get rid (after the Queen dies) how would you vote?

(Ignoring the fact that this isn't how it would work and if Brexit has gone like this, doing a deal with the Royal Family could be just as painful)

I'm genuinely not sure how I'd vote.

Get rid.

I follow the royals the way others follow the Kardashians, find the whole thing utterly fascinating. But the whole concept of hereditary monarchy is ridiculous and has no place in the modern world. Those saying "keep but get rid of Andrew" or "keep but only until the Queen dies" or "keep but with a nicer family" fundamentally misunderstand the concept.

I would advocate for a presidency similar to the Irish system (I'm Irish).

get rid....the sooner the better.

Spudlet · 19/11/2019 08:59

Keep, but with reform. Slim things down to the direct line - the rest of them have all sorts of privately owned houses so they’re hardly going to be left destitute.

I think compulsory abdication/retirement at 65 is a good idea. I think them paying for more of their upkeep with a little bit of their massive pile of money is a good idea. I think paying for fewer of them is a good idea.

But I do like the idea of some It's a Knockout/Big Brother type competition where only the winners stay in on the Civil List.

HerondaleDucks · 19/11/2019 09:10

I'd keep purely because Princess Anne and William and Kate are holding it all together. But it could definitely do with thinning down.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/11/2019 09:13

Polls seem to show most in favour of the monarchy, but significantly less enthusiasm amongst younger people.

At a certain point Rexit will be more popular than Brexit - and may even happen before it!

HairyToity · 19/11/2019 09:25

I'd like a Republic please!

onedayiwillmissthis · 19/11/2019 09:26

Get rid

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 19/11/2019 09:31

Get rid. You needed a vote button on this...

MadisonMontgomery · 19/11/2019 09:33

Keep, but massively slimmed down - ideally I’d like a vote for top 5 and then the rest have to self-support, but if not then literally just the regent and immediate heirs.

Ravenrob · 19/11/2019 09:35

I sway towards get rid but I'd need to look into it properly before I decided.

ajandjjmum · 19/11/2019 09:35

Keep.

Keep

OhMyDarling · 19/11/2019 09:47

Keep!!!!!

scaryteacher · 19/11/2019 09:52

Keep...we tried getting rid of the monarchy before, and yet had them back.

I think the Princess Royal, the POW, the Cambridgeshire and the Wessexes (especially the Countess of Wessex), do good things, and HM. The Duke of Kent and the Gloucesters are very involved as well.

OlaEliza · 19/11/2019 10:07

Keep

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 19/11/2019 10:11

we tried getting rid of the monarchy before, and yet had them back.

Not really comparable is it.

Charles I actually ruled and Cromwell really tried to install himself and his offspring in a kind of quasi hereditary monarchy. Not a very popular one either

Nowadays The Queen is nothing more than a figurehead and we are actually ruled by one of the longest standing democracies in the world....

HulksPurplePanties · 19/11/2019 10:12

I'm a Canadian and I would say keep. If we got rid we'd have to re-work how the government is run and whoever we replaced the Queen/King with would want more than just a rubber stamp position, not to mention that added expenses of voting them in...

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 19/11/2019 10:15

We wouldn't need to replace the queen. Our democracy can rule perfectly fine without a president etc.

HulksPurplePanties · 19/11/2019 10:18

Technically you need a 3rd body of government to break ties or disagreements between the House of Commons and the Senate. Arguably it never happens, but that's what it's for.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 19/11/2019 10:21

Abolish them in favour of an elected head of state when the Queen dies. The Harry and Meghan stuff , the PC documentary, and now Andrew has just turned me right off them. Arrogant, entitled and anachronistic .
Give all their Palaces to the National Trust. Give their art to art galleries for the public to enjoy. All their money to pay for more hospitals and schools and to keep public libraries going.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 19/11/2019 10:23

Our parliment doesnt work like that. We dont get ties between the House of Lords and House of Commons. A bill has to get through both Houses to pass. If the bill fails to get through the house of Lords its thrown back to the House of Commons for amendment (or is shelved).

BiarritzCrackers · 19/11/2019 10:25

Get rid. But at the very least, massively slim down. And give the people our land back!
