Cos62 x 12 = 8.1cm

RobinHumphries · 18/11/2019 19:18

Cos 62 x 12 = the length AB

It's Pythagoras Theorem for right angled triangles - google should be able to help. Need a scientific calculator (or google)!

troppibambini · 18/11/2019 19:19

Thank that's what she put and it's coming up wrong.
I'm wondering if there is a problem with question perhaps.

Sorry should say it's online homework.

It's to do with Soh cah toa (sin, cos, tan)

You are working with adjacent and hypotenusr so need to use cos
Cos (of the angle) = adjacent/hypotenuse so

Adjacent = cos 62 x hypotenuse
A = cos 62 x 12

Havent got a calculator to get the answer

fizzyfizz · 18/11/2019 19:20

Cos 63 is 0.6735

I googled it.

fizzyfizz · 18/11/2019 19:21

Soz, cos 62 that should say!

woodlands01 · 18/11/2019 19:23

Calculator needs to be in degree mode not radians - check for a small D top of display just right of centre. Better to do 12 x Cos62 so the 12 doesn't end up in Cos bracket

troppibambini · 18/11/2019 19:23

Thanks very much both the answers are coming up wrong which is completely confusing her.

OP posts:
woodlands01 · 18/11/2019 19:24

What us her answer I will check

woodlands01 · 18/11/2019 19:26

Should be 5.6cm

troppibambini · 18/11/2019 19:26

Thank you @woodlands01 you were right online calculator was in the wrong mode!!!
Correct answer 5.6
Happy dd she's good at maths and was really starting to doubt herself.

OP posts:
catchingzzzeds · 18/11/2019 19:27

Is she remembering to put the decimal place? And the value (cm)?

troppibambini · 18/11/2019 19:27

XPost @woodlands01 thanks again.

catchingzzzeds · 18/11/2019 19:27

Glad it's sorted!

ForeverBubblegum · 18/11/2019 19:30

You need to use SohCahToa

You know the hypotenu (12), and are trying to find the ajacent side (AB), so the relevant bit is 'Cah'

That means the cosine of the angels is adjacent over hypotenu.

Or cos(62)= AB / 12

Rearrange it to AB = cos(62) x 12

AB = 5.6

dementedpixie · 18/11/2019 19:30

I was going to ask whether degrees or radians were used

MollysMummy2010 · 18/11/2019 20:13

I am dreading this ... I can’t do my 9yo homework!
