Is this bullying or normal school stuff?

Ds is year 8 and having trouble with some boys calling him names before some classes, when they see him etc. The names used don’t include offensive language and are based on a cartoon character ds’s name resembles. It is obviously bothering him a bit but thus far dh and I have encouraged him to ignore/laugh it off - they obviously do it for a reaction....but given it has been ongoing throughout this term I’m worried it may degenerate into something worse. Dh & I both went to boarding schools where there was very little home contact so in our experience you just grin & bare it....but actually should we be doing something about this and contacting school? Or is that a snowflake reaction?!

If it bothers him, then I wouldn’t tell him to ‘fro and bear it’ but tell them that he doesn’t like it and wants it to stop.
If he laughs it off, how would the kids even know he minds???

Definitely tell school if it's upsetting him.

An email to his form tutor explaining and they will have a word with the boys. A lot of the time this stops silly name calling - if not then go back to school and they will come down harder.

Just wanted to come back & say thank you for the comments & sensible advice above - as you say if he doesn’t say stop then how are they to know? He did say it & it seems to have worked, bar the ring leader....but ds is way more confident in dealing with it now he’s found his voice. Thanks.
