Switch games for 14yo

Ds 14 has asked for a switch for Christmas, mostly to play Pokemon. DSis is getting him the Pokemon game, but won’t see him until after Christmas to give him it. Can anyone suggest a game he might like so he has something to play in the interim please? He has a PS4 which he mainly plays Fortnite on.

Mario kart?

Splatoon, luigi’s mansion 3, dragon quest builders, Zelda breath of the wild

This is a big problem with a Switch main gift! Once my DD completed Pokémon last year she didn't get as much use as she could have until her birthday. There are lots of cheap games available on the Nintendo Eshop but they won't hold interest for as long. Can dsis not give it to him earlier? Or send him an Eshop voucher? Or you get him an Eshop voucher so he can choose? I think it would be quite unfair to get him the switch then make him wait for the only game he is getting though I can really appreciate why, they are so expensive.

The best games are the expensive ones and they almost never go on offer unfortunately.
What about a family gift like Mario Kart? Otherwise Minecraft is one of the cheaper ones.

I'd consider getting him Pokémon sword/shield along side and then getting Dsis to get him Pokémon let's go. If Pokémon is his interest.

Splatoon is the one that's been played the most here, much more than Pokemon. Mario Kart as well, and over Christmas last year we played a lot of the 1-2-Switch games together.

Currys have a Switch with Pokémon game for the same price as a Switch on its own at the moment. There will be Amazon Black Friday deals for a switch and game combo too.
