Nintendo Switch versus Nintendo Lite

DS 11 has asked for the Switch for Christmas. He has had a Nintendo DS for years, and he got an xbox two years ago. He has got great value from both so I don't mind getting him another device this year. But is the Switch really worth the hefty price tag? I'm not a gamer, and find it hard to tell. He's an only child, really values playing with his pals. Any advice? Thanks

The Switch is much better for in-person multiplayer. It's also needed for the Nintendo Labo stuff. The Switch Lite is cheaper.

Personally I’d get the Switch if your budget allows. Then you have the options for using it as a handheld device, or on the tv, or even on the go as a small screen/for multiplayer use. The Lite is handheld only I believe.

Thanks for replies, don't know what the Nintendo Labo stuff is but off to google :-)

Just wondering will the Switch really add much value if he already has an Xbox? Just another thing to plug into the TV, and also all his friends have xbox like him. Not too sure how many of them will get an extra very expensive console on top of xbox. Whereas the Lite looks good for travelling, taking out etc. It's hard to decide ... a big purchase.

The Switch is portable. It doesn't need to be plugged into a tv so it's great for long car journeys etc.

Justonemoremojito · 17/11/2019 14:33

Switch is good for family games, mario party, Olympics etc they're good fun for everyone, can be used on the tv or as a handheld the switch lite is only handheld and actually isn't a whole lot smaller than the switch (we have both)

simonisnotme · 17/11/2019 15:21

i have just had this conversation with myself Grin
i plumped for the switch as opposed to the switch light with the thought being when the kids (28&30) come over at Christmas etc we can play mariocart together on mine without them having to bring all their stuff and i can play on the tv when DH is out

We have both switch and Xbox one.

Both are great, I personally prefer the Xbox but the switch is fab for family friendly games like Mario kart - the new Luigi’s mansion is great.

I’d get the switch not the lite if you can stretch to it, then you can multi play and use on the tv.

icclemunchy · 17/11/2019 17:48

We have the switch and I'd go for that. I'm not even really a gamer but love a round of Mario cart with the family. Even my 4yo has a go (I don't sulk when I don't win oh no not me! 😂)

FromEden · 17/11/2019 18:07

I dont see the point of the switch lite tbh. you can't "switch" it from handheld to the tv. And you can't detach the controllers to play multiplayer when out and about. Go for the regular switch. We also have an xbox but as others have said, Mario kart, party etc are great for playing together.

Aulwan · 18/11/2019 08:14

Can you detach the Switch and take it on holidays or does it need to be plugged into the base/tv regularly?

Doesn't need to be, can just be charged off a normal usb c which is the charger that most newer phones use

ritzbiscuits · 18/11/2019 10:22

I've gone for the Switch rather than Switch Lite. I want my DS playing on a big screen and co-playing with me, rather than being isolated on an individual device.

The Switch can be used both through TV and handheld, you can easily take it travelling without needing the dock. I'm sure if you pop on you tube there will be some official Switch adverts to demonstrate how that works.

Aulwan · 18/11/2019 18:52

Seems unanimous for the Switch then, thanks everyone.

I’ve debated getting the Switch every year for my DC but it hasn’t come down from £279 at all! It’s so expensive Sad grrr!!

ritzbiscuits · 18/11/2019 19:32

@Letseatgrandma the one that’s out now is new hardware V1.1, you’re unlikely to see it discounted but I know a few people have got a deal on credit with Very with £50 off.

Poppiesway1 · 18/11/2019 19:40

@ ritzbiscuits that is a good idea! I e been looking hoping something would come down in the Black Friday sale.. I had a letter offering my £50 off from Very last week. Now thinking I chucked it out but will go look!!!

CatEyeliner · 18/11/2019 20:58

I’d not touch the lite if you can afford the switch original
My daughter loves the toy con kits which require the joycons to be removed. There’s no real other way of using that game otherwise (and it’s a great game that doesn’t 100% rely on the switch to play!)

Also we can all play as a family by using the joy cons as two remotes for a start.
