What do you do if you wear glasses and want to swim?

ImBlue · 16/11/2019 11:04

I'm desperate to lose weight and the only form is exercise I enjoy is swimming. I have really bad eyesight and the thought of being without my glasses scares me.

How do I get to the pool? How do I see others in lanes/pool?

I can't wear contacts (specifically told not to do this by a professional) so not a case of I just can't put them in...

Sounds so silly, I know Blush

It’s expensive but you can buy prescription goggles

pelirocco123 · 16/11/2019 11:06

I always wear my glasses swimming...but i dont put my face in the water

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 16/11/2019 11:07

You can buy prescription goggles - would that be an option?

I'm not a 'serious' swimmer and I manage by wearing an old pair of glasses in the pool - it's not ideal but I can see better with them than without them.

SmellMySmellbow · 16/11/2019 11:08

You can get prescription goggles pretty cheaply on amazon. About £20 I think. It'll be same prescription both eyes but should be enough for the pool.

Agent13 · 16/11/2019 11:09

I keep my glasses on, can’t do anything without them. I was told by an optician that wearing contacts in the whole is absolutely not recommended as there’s a much higher risk of eye infection from the water if you’ve got a lens in there

Darkandfullofterror · 16/11/2019 11:13

I got prescription swimming goggles for DC, they have made such a difference. The optician was able to order separate lenses and make the googles up to DCs prescription and I think they might have been £40ish? Worth it.

muddledmidget · 16/11/2019 11:14

I bought prescription goggles from amazon and they're fantastic. I chose the right prescription for each eye and they sent me the eye pieces, strap and different sized nose pieces to make my own goggles that fit perfectly, and meant I could learn to swim properly

Ilikesweetpeas · 16/11/2019 11:18

As others have said prescription goggles are good. We found a company called butterfly healthcare very helpful

Aridane · 16/11/2019 11:19

Just wear your glasses (or an old pair of you have one). Personally I hate the feel of goggles

OldBear · 16/11/2019 11:19

Decathlon prescription goggles are pretty good and cheap

Thehagonthehill · 16/11/2019 11:20

Prescription goggles, they're not expensive.

EBearhug · 16/11/2019 11:21

I'm another saying prescription goggles. There are comparatively cheap ones available online, and you can have a different prescription in each eye if your eyes need it.

TaurielTest · 16/11/2019 11:21

Prescription goggles for sure! I get mine from here, small UK business, they offer different prescriptions in each eye and are still under 20 quid. goggleyed.co.uk/

WeeDangerousSpike · 16/11/2019 11:22

Prescription goggles. They aren't expensive. I got mine from amazon for 20 quid.

3luckystars · 16/11/2019 11:23

Prescription goggles! Genius.

Best of luck with the swimming.

dementedpixie · 16/11/2019 11:26

Think I got dds from here:

YourOpinionIsNoted · 16/11/2019 11:28

I always thought prescription goggles were really expensive, this is such good news! I'm getting some. Centre parcs is going to be way more fun!

sashh · 16/11/2019 11:34

My local optician sells prescription goggles for about £20.00

DeanImpala67 · 16/11/2019 11:38

Another one for prescription googles, I got mine from Specsavers for £27 and they were made up to my prescription. They have been a revelation for swimming pool use as I can now see the lane signs and everything! They were also fab at water parks on holiday.

itsgettingweird · 16/11/2019 11:45

My prescription Goggles were £20 from specsavers. This is for basic prescription only and although I have complex with several astigmatism they found the best fit prescription so my sight is improved even if not perfect

1066vegan · 16/11/2019 12:10

I'm so glad that I came across this thread. I've always just walked around in a complete blur. I hadn't realised that you could get prescription goggles.

magimedi · 16/11/2019 12:13

I swim regularly & got my goggles from here:

www.prescription-swimming-goggles.co.uk/

They were about £20/25 & are not an exact match for my specs but good enough to see everything fine.

Doje · 16/11/2019 12:39

A friend of mine just swims in hers.

I'm with Specsavers, and they do them. When you do buy 1 get one free (which seems to be the only way to do it) you can get goggles as your 2nd pair I think. There might be an extra fee, but could be worth checking out, especially if you're with Specsavers already.

scarecrowfeet · 16/11/2019 12:41

My prescription goggles were £10 off amazon. I'm -6. They do the job so you don't have to pay a lot.

CMOTDibbler · 16/11/2019 12:42

I get my goggles from Prescription Goggles as mentioned upthread - I need different powers in each eye so like the Aquasphere Eagles but do have a few different sorts as I wanted tinted for outdoor swimming
