What do you do if you wear glasses and want to swim?

ImBlue · 16/11/2019 11:04

I'm desperate to lose weight and the only form is exercise I enjoy is swimming. I have really bad eyesight and the thought of being without my glasses scares me.

How do I get to the pool? How do I see others in lanes/pool?

I can't wear contacts (specifically told not to do this by a professional) so not a case of I just can't put them in...

Sounds so silly, I know Blush

I just go blind Grin

Good to know prescription goggles are so cheap tho!

magimedi · 16/11/2019 12:56

Prescription goggles really come into their own if you are on holiday & swimming somewhere really beautiful - so lovely to be able to swim out a bit & look back at the shore properly - not in a haze.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/11/2019 13:03

Î was so hopeful when I saw "Prescription goggles." here

but I've just clicked on several and they don't go up to anywhere near prescription 16 ☹️

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/11/2019 13:10

I got mine from goggleyed - I just sent my prescription and they made them for me £17:50 and very good.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/11/2019 13:11

16? Wow that’s a big number.

UnholyStramash · 16/11/2019 13:33

I just looked on amazon - obvs there are other vendors - they have goggles where you can order to suit your prescription in EACH eye. They go up to minus 8 which not be enough for some but is better than I’m shit at linkies but what I put in that brought it up eventually was „anti-myopia adult swimming But, as others have said, some opticians will be able to get goggles that suit your eyes more closely.

When my children were little I wore old glasses (bc my good ones grew a bit green from the chemicals, round nose piece only) - it meant I could see them at all times and see the clock on the wall. I didn’t need to see everything as if I was driving or reading a board in the station.

UnholyStramash · 16/11/2019 13:40

Okay, OP, I’ve just seen your eyes are minus 16. Unless you wear old glasses as some pp have suggested, you probably should go into an optician like Specsaver and ask them about it. It’s likely to cost a bit more but hopefully won’t be prohibitive. They should get you something closer to your prescription though maybe not 20/20 correction. Good luck, OP - with the weight loss as well as the search for goggles. I’m in a similar position though my eyes are around minus 7/8 but with huge astigmatism.

dementedpixie · 16/11/2019 13:44

It's not op that is -16. OP hasnt told us their prescription

UnholyStramash · 16/11/2019 13:57

Okay, that might make it easier for OP then. Sorry, I got names mixed up.

murmuration · 16/11/2019 14:02

I got a little strap that attaches to my glasses and keeps them on my head, and then just wear them. I'm afraid I can't remember what they're called! I found them in the sports section of a big box store.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 16/11/2019 14:05

I got my prescription goggles from here

fitzbilly · 16/11/2019 14:05

My life was revolutionised when I got prescription goggles, I ordered them on Amazon for £20. Now I can see, and I end up swimming faster and I'm not working about splashing my glasses.

fascinated · 16/11/2019 14:07

For years I wore prescription goggles that were not really strong enough but it helped enough to be able to navigate the pool, showers, steps etc. Once actually swimming it didn’t matter. Just for those with really high prescription- some correction is better than nothing.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/11/2019 14:13

My fiancé just swims without glasses, I swim in contacts and goggles.

pooopypants · 16/11/2019 14:17

I don't understand why you wouldn't just wear your glasses, like normal? I do, even when we take the kids swimming and they splash. A lot.

Iamallatsea · 16/11/2019 14:19

Prescription of -13, years of wearing my glasses in the pool especially needed when supervising my children. Some pools ask you to sign an insurance waiver in case they come off and you try and claim, mine always stayed on fine though. There are elastic sports bands that would help hold on your glasses more securely if you were worried.
Now my kids are grown up and it’s just me I bought prescription goggles, - 10 was the strongest I could find for a reasonable cost, got mine at Costco. Strong enough prescription for swimming in for me. If i needed to have the exact prescription I would have to go to an optician and pay a lot more.

scarecrowfeet · 16/11/2019 14:25

You can't just wear glasses if you're doing proper swim training and putting your head under a lot. Mine would be at the bottom of the pool in no time (and then I wouldn't be able to see to find them !).

Aridane · 16/11/2019 14:31

Yes, but if you're starting off with some gentle swimming you can

helpfulperson · 16/11/2019 20:43

Wear glasses and strap. Decathlon do a goid range. I'm- 17

nikkylou · 16/11/2019 20:57

I'm short sighted, I don't bother wearing them. There nothing I need to see far away, and I can see shapes of people to avoid bumping into them well enough.

Not that it stops the surprise kid turning up suddenly next to you, but they're not looking either so...

Besides no glasses means I can't see anyone's face judging as I waddle around the edge, sludge through the shallows or lurch up the ladder. Not that anyone would be, but having no glasses means I cant tell either way.

Gingerkittykat · 16/11/2019 21:03

I'm -6 and don't wear anything. Getting to the pool can be slightly tricky but not impossible, in the pool itself I can see the rough outlines of the lines and the shapes of people so I don't bump into them.

fascinated · 16/11/2019 21:05

You can’t put your head under the water with glasses on though - you need Goggles, surely?

amusedbush · 16/11/2019 21:06

-16? Shock I’m -7 and can’t see a damn thing without glasses or lenses, as in I couldn’t leave my house without them. What is it like to be -16? Sorry if that’s a silly question but the strongest prescription I’ve heard of is -10 so I’m intrigued!

Alanna1 · 16/11/2019 21:08

Prescription goggles here.

ratspeaker · 16/11/2019 21:10

I got my prescription goggles from Asda opticians. Around £20 I think. Obviously they're not varifocals like my glasses but they're great for swimming pools and sea bathing ( in the Med I may add I've not joined those brave souls in the Forth except for Ne'er Day)
