Puppies first night and he’s fallen asleep on me-should I wake him?!

He’s had such a busy day, very little rest he’s just been too excited. He’s just crashed out on my knee. Tried to transfer him to his pen but he started howling. I feel very out of my depth (exactly how I felt first night home with DD!) do I leave him sleep? Do I wake him? Help!!

Thanks for all the messages! I’ll read them when I’m fully awake. Last night was unbelievable, we put him in his pen around 9pm, he cried for about 3 mins and then complete silence! We woke him up 5 mins ago (we’re a family of early to bed early to rise so he might as well get into our routine from the start although he can obviously sleep longer if he wants to I just thought we’d better let him out for a wee!) We’d put a puppy pad down and he’d used that (I know lots of people don’t like them as it confuses them, our plan had been to take him out when he started crying)

Seems far too easy, I’m wondering if he’s plotting something for tonight! I didn’t sleep a wink of course 😆

He is beautiful! That sounds like a successful night. Hope you manage to get some sleep tonight too!

I didn’t sleep a wink! He’s doing great at weeing outside but all poos have been inside so far so I’m watching him like a hawk. He even did a wee in the garden, came inside and then immediately pooped in the kitchen!

He’s a real lap magnet, he’ll only settle on someone’s knee rather than in his bed so that’s something we need to work on-any tips for that?

Can’t help with the lap limpet thing, I’m afraid. If he’s part Springer, which looks likely, they’re known as velcro dogs.

A nice blanket, made into a snuggly bed/nest alongside you, should get the best outcome - a free lap with an adorable nose, chin and ears resting on your leg.

Oh wow I have a ten week old collie boy too..

Mine came home at 8 weeks and he's got his night time spot down to a tee. Next to me left side of the bed.

We're having a lot of biting which I have not had with a pup before. Not all the time just about twice a day for a crazy half a hour. Lovely the rest of the time.

Congratulations on yours! Ours likes to nibble but no real biting yet.

He’s been fed, watered, played with and had a wee so I’ve put him in his pen with a blanket over (he can see out of one side). He whimpered but he’s settled now. He’s falling to sleep but not going into a deep sleep, I’m sitting quietly but any tiny noise and his little eyes pop open.

No advice OP but 😍

What a gorgeous pup. Does he smell delicious? 😊

I wouldn't worry about stopping him sleeping on your knee. Having a puppy sleep on you is one of life's great joys. He will learn to fall asleep elsewhere in time.

Brigante9 - that's interesting. My dog is nearly 11 and half springer. She is always trying to get on a lap and she's getting worse as she gets older!!

Boysnme · 16/11/2019 13:10

we have a 12 week old Cockapoo - he’s got the night time down well, sleeps from 10-7 most nights with the odd night of needing a pee (takes all of 2 mins to get up pop him outside let him pee and pop him back in his crate)
We do try and let him have as much rest during the day as we can be that on our knees or in his crate. He’s actually happier and more settled in his crate.

He is trying to bite a lot though, guess his teeth are coming in so we’ve been keeping lots of distractions next to us to replace our hands with a toy!

Good luck though, it will get easier but there’s no doubting these early days are hard.

Oh and I can recommend the simple stain dog stain and odour remover for any accidents!
