Puppies first night and he’s fallen asleep on me-should I wake him?!

He’s had such a busy day, very little rest he’s just been too excited. He’s just crashed out on my knee. Tried to transfer him to his pen but he started howling. I feel very out of my depth (exactly how I felt first night home with DD!) do I leave him sleep? Do I wake him? Help!!

STart as you mean to go on.
If he’s sleeping downstairs pit him in his bed 😀 hot water bottle noisy clock.
He’ll cr....., go down comfort him. Once maybe.
DOnt pit him in your bed, dogs need to know their place.....lower down the food chain.

Mine is 14 now and sticking to the rule early on made life easier.

Oh and it is completely normal to feel out of your depth.

Hot water bottle and radio 4 helped settle our pup on her first night. I slept on the sofa for the first week, with her crate next to me. I think I laid next to the crate while she went to sleep too.

If you keep taking him outside he'll get used to it. Eventually their bladders get bigger and they can hold for longer.

Gorgeous pupper by the way

ClownsandCowboys · 15/11/2019 18:55

Our 16 weeks pup still goes to bed with a hot water bottle and radio 4 Blush

Irisloulou · 15/11/2019 18:58

Is he a border collie?

bobstersmum · 15/11/2019 19:03

Omg I'm so puppy broody now!

DogAndCatPerson · 15/11/2019 19:06

I agree with @ClownsandCowboys.

Weeing every 20mins is normal in little pups. They have tiny bladders and no training in holding it, so they need to go outside regularly. They can go longer during the night but you’ll still find you’re getting up in the night two or three times to take him out when he’s very small (this will reduce down to nothing as he gets older, more settled and his capacity increases).

GreyHare · 15/11/2019 19:21

Tonight probably won't be too bad as he will be exhausted, tomorrow night will be when the proper problems start, try putting a worn t'shirt in his bed and wrapping up a ticking clock is good as it mimics a heartbeat and he will have been used to sleeping in a puppy pile with his siblings, I would let him sleep on you for a bit, you could also put his bed next to you on the sofa and settle him in it so he knows you are still close.

Puppies pee and poop an extraordinary amount and they can't hold it to any extent until they are about 16 weeks old, but outside often, as soon as they wake and after food and every 30 minutes whilst awake to start with, and lots of praise when they do it right.

Livebythecoast · 15/11/2019 19:21

I'm sorry OP. He looks miserable with you. He needs to be with me Wink.
What's his name?

LaurieFairyCake · 15/11/2019 19:25

I kept my girl in a crate next to my bed and even at this age she just whined once/twice to go out (and I wakened up)

Eventually she slept 5/6 hours after about 20 weeks

A year later I put her on the bed (and she jumped off into her crate for the night)

Two years later her ass is in the curve of my back every night - and I get the best sleep ever 😍 (a full 8 hours) - and I wake to a tummy rub every morning

I luffs her so much.

And yours is GORGEOUS

Winterdaysarehere · 15/11/2019 19:29

Laurie how have you trained your ddog to rub your tummy??

sonjadog · 15/11/2019 19:29

When my dogs have been that small, I have tucked them down a tights jumper so that their head sticks out at the top my my chest. Then I can do other stuff while they sleep, or have a nap in the armchair if it is night time.

I have always had my dogs go to bed and sleep in their beds at night right from when they are small. Their bed has been in the dog crate until they are about 9 months and old enough not to destroy themselves or anything else if they wake up before me. The first couple of weeks, this means that you end up getting up a lot at night to comfort (and do the jumper trick), but it really is only for a very short while.

They do need to pee all the time, it is just how it is when they have such little bladders. Again, the first weeks are the worst for the peeing!

I'm the tummy rubbing slave

PennyNotSoWise · 15/11/2019 19:38

Aaww, he's lush! What breed is he OP? Is he a Frenchie? I'm useless at recognising breeds Grin

I wouldn't be able to resist taking him to bed with me.

Clymene · 15/11/2019 19:39

OMG look at those ears!

Blanket (do you have one that smells of his mum?), another that smells of you and a hot water bottle. And sleep next to him.

They are like babies - pee every few hours. But it gets better. You wouldn't believe how long my 5 year old dog can hold his pee when it's raining (about 12 hours).

Flower777 · 15/11/2019 19:45

Awww. I’m just here for the pics.

Poochie284 · 15/11/2019 19:47

He’s a mutt-bit of terrier/spaniel goodness knows what 😄

DH is now on puppy duty while I put DD to bed. I can hear him scrubbing the floor while chatting to him so I’m guessing there’s been an accident! I’m exhausted and I’ve really done very little today other than walk in and out of the garden, I think it saps your energy cause you can’t really relax.

Wish us luck for tonight!

managedmis · 15/11/2019 19:55

Oh my freakin god I love a puppy

He's gorgeous op

Wowserme · 15/11/2019 20:00

Let mom have a T-shirt that you’ve been wearing to snuggle up to in his bed. It should help comfort him. He’s beautiful by the way! 😍

DishingOutDone · 15/11/2019 20:03

He will want a lot of wee wees - I use the Victoria Stillwell book and she recommends having the crateor bed next to your bed at least initially. I hate it when people boast about leaving a puppy to cry downstairs. You can still have him a crate but next to you. He should settle after a while, then he will wake up for a wee like a baby - however, we set our alarm for 2am and 4am for a few nights to take him outside. Don't force him to wee in his bed.
