Who knows what 'Mx' is?

I'm just wondering how many people have heard of 'Mx' as a title. It can be used by either gender, and is increasingly accepted when filling in online forms and suchlike.
I use it - it's on my driving licence even, but some of the drop down menus don't have it as an option. My favourite is EDF electricity who have Mr, Miss, Mrs, Ms, Dr, Prof., Corporal, Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and a MASSIVE list of other military ones, then Sir, Dame, Lady etc... but no 'Mx'.
I'm just wondering how many people have even heard of it.

I don't see why I need to express my sex to make, for example, an online purchase for dog food, or something. I don't see whose business it is. There's no way any organisation would ask 'Penis or vagina?' but that's essentially what they're asking.

But they want to know your sex and collect as much data as possible so they can profile you for targeted offers etc as a customer. They are also happy to know you style yourself a Mx because they know that means you are a certain type of person, whatever your sex.

Ereshkigal · 16/11/2019 10:31

But I also wouldn't have to encounter any more of their prejudice beyond their initial decision. That'll do for me.

Fair point, but then the interview isn't a "two way process" in that respect as you said, as it's not something you have the information to assess. They're judging you, not vice versa. You will never know why they rejected you.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 10:33

@Ereshkigal Yes, and I'm not comfortable with them collecting certain data about me. If they want to decide that 'Mx' means I'm a 'certain type of person' (can you clarify what you mean?) then that's just their inference.

My partner runs a software company and they have just gotten rid of titles on their forms all together. I'm not sure why they're necessary.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 10:37

@Ereshkigal Fair point about the two way process thing.

Yes, and I'm not comfortable with them collecting certain data about me.

Again, that's a fair point, but they will try whatever you do. I meant that they will likely assume you're in the LGBT or strong ally demographic and target accordingly along with the other info they have about you such as purchasing information.

Unihorn · 16/11/2019 10:44

Mx means Macromatix to me and it's a stock control and maintenance platform used in the hospitality industry. I was confused as to why there was a thread on it.

sashh · 16/11/2019 10:50

@sashh Are you saying that men cannot choose 'Mx' on a driving licence?

I don't know if they can choose anytitle, I've not seen a title on a man's driving licence at all.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 10:55

@sashh I've checked this and anybody can use 'Mx' on their driving licence.

Use newly made up words that have an x in, dye your hair blue and wear a rainbow badge. The message it sends is not necessarily the one you want to send and that is what you need to be aware of.

If I am going through a giant stack of cvs for a new position I can guarantee the ones with any hint of this will be binned at the first cut!

SirVixofVixHall · 16/11/2019 11:47

Friend of mine in shop with elderly bluestocking...
Assistant, noting details- “So are you Mrs, or Ms ?”
EB, rising to full height .” If you want to be correct, it is DAME “ .

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 11:47

I know my old conservative boss would have binned any CVs with this on it. And there are a lot more old conservative men out there in hiring positions than gender critical women.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 16/11/2019 11:50

A few teachers at dd's school are "Mx". I roll my eyes very hard.

Apparently they're all just "Miss" to the students anyway though.

sashh · 16/11/2019 11:50

Eckhart

Yes men can put it on the form but that does not mean the DVLA will print it on the licence.

You could probably ask for it to be printed if you are a man, but as most don't the fact you have a title on your licence indicates you are a woman.

wowfudge · 16/11/2019 11:52

I thought we were moving away from using titles. What's wrong with just using someone's name?

Wimbledonmam · 16/11/2019 11:52

Absolute nonsense.

missmeg3leg · 16/11/2019 11:57

Read title of thread & expected someone wanting help with deciphering medical notes!....mx in my day to day work (breast surgery) is a common abbreviation for mastectomy.....ah well you learn something new every day!

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:00

By the way my ex conservative boss would not have employed anyone using this title because he would have just assumed they would be a trouble maker. He also refused to employ anyone who had done a Gender Studies degree as he said from experience they were always trouble.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 16/11/2019 12:01

but Ms is nearly a look at me I’m not telling you if I’m married, single, divorced type status and draws more attention to them

This made me smile. I call myself Ms because I feel too old to be a Miss - my 13 year old is a Miss - and I am divorced x 2, so totally inaccurate to be called Mrs. I had no idea people would think I was trying to be mysterious and attention seeking. I had thought that my tired, ageing face and lack of wedding ring would speak for themselves on why I use Ms.

😆

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:02

@XXCoffeeHoneyBread I imagine that most people who use 'Mx' will have considered mindless prejudice and don't really care. There's a lot of people who don't judge, or who judge with a sound basis.

Can I ask you why you hold such prejudice? How many 'Mx's do you know? Or is it, in your case, fully mindless?

OP posts:
Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:03

@caranconnor Wow, he sounds... er... amazing!

OP posts:
caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:09

I am not saying my ex conservative boss is right. I am saying that you will be judged if you use this title by many employers. Basically unless you work in a sector or workplace that is very into trans rights, I would advise against using it.
Unless you really think it is important to use, in which case I suspect you would be advocating for trans rights and non binary people in the workplace as well.

caranconnor · 16/11/2019 12:11

And I do think that people who mix in social circles of woke people often do not understand how conservative most of society is.

Eckhart · 16/11/2019 12:27

@caranconnor You would advise against using it because it will mean having less to do with people like your judgemental ex conservative boss? I'd see that as an advantage myself. It's quite a useful filtering tool.
