Nintendo 2DS or 2DS XL?

I'm a bit confused about which to buy. I want to upgrade my old ds which my 5 yr old plays from time to time. With him in mind I would like a sturdy console. I've read some reviews that say the 2DS (which doesn't fold) is sturdier, but in my head it makes sense that the folding one (2DS XL) would be better as the screens would be protected when its not in use...
Any suggestions?

It's the Nintendo ds I want to upgrade btw, not my actual "d"son! Although after tonights bedtime I'm sure there's definitely room for improvement...!

The XL feels quite sturdy enough to me. I've never had the plain 2DS.

A handful of games, such as Hyrule Warriors, play much better on the XL, and one (Xenoblade) won't play at all on the plain one. Also, only the XL lets you buy old SNES games from the eshop.
