Can someone explain the JL ad?

What does she give Edgar, and what does he do at the feast (at the end)? Cook bread by breathing fire on it? How is that related to the gift?

Loved it!

Not sure they can f eg bet beat their first one though. This for me is the best one since then.

FreeBedForFlys · 14/11/2019 14:16

I don’t think anything will ever beat Monty the Penguin for me.

TheDogsMother · 14/11/2019 14:19

I think it is really lovely and it made me well up. Having said that I well up at a dog food advert Grin

Grannybags · 14/11/2019 14:22

It’s cute but not as good as the Walkers one! All Christmas ads this year will be judged against that one.

WombleishOfTheThighs · 14/11/2019 14:28

It was the bit where the baker puts an already baked loaf into the oven that made me Hmm

gamerchick · 14/11/2019 14:32

It’s awful. For some reason Twitter’s drooling over it but I think JL have really missed the mark this year

Someone says the same every year on these threads.

Unshriven · 14/11/2019 14:33

Aldi have the best Christmas ads.

No sign of Kevin or a spout in the stores this year though.

Rafflesway · 14/11/2019 14:47

I'm just beginning to realise how bah humbug i am about all this! 😒

Do these hugely expensive, cheesy ads really encourage extra custom? Is this the point of them or are the stores just being hugely altruistic in giving everyone an assumed visual treat for Christmas? 😂

I can sort of see the M & S one does encourage extra sales as they do make the food and drink look fab - excellent camera work - but I can't bear those this year as Paddy McGuinness irritates the hell out of me. 😡

Nope, sorry but they don't do anything for me at all and that Bastille guy singing the J.L. ad sounds awful imo but then I'm a doddering old sod almost 😁

Hecateh · 14/11/2019 14:57

I love the Aldi one.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 14/11/2019 15:18

@ReviewingTheSituation The JL app lists the Waitrose Christmas pudding as 'seen on the advert'... And even if she does bake it at home, why is she let loose with brandy (or whatever) to flambé it with and a dragon who clearly cannot control his fiery talent as well as could be desired?

I'm just seeing health and safety and licensing violations all over this.

Can someone explain the JL ad?
Justmuddlingalong · 14/11/2019 15:26

The Lidl one irritates me. There are worse things that could happen, but settling down with a cuppa, ready to scoff a mince pie and then realising you've been charged for 2 empty boxes would piss me right off. I can't unhear the hollow noise as they put the clearly empty boxes in the trolley.

WombleishOfTheThighs · 14/11/2019 15:32

TheNestedIf · 14/11/2019 17:07

The reason the JL advert is confusing is because she bakes the Christmas Pudding. You don't bake Christmas Pudding, you steam it (done when you can no longer see out of any window in the house for the condensation)! I had no idea what it was meant to be until it was set on fire.

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 17:34

I went into JL today, they’re selling cuddly dragon soft toys and matching children’s wellies. No altruism involved in the making of that ad!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 14/11/2019 17:39

I hated it, it's so sad. Edgar is trying so hard to fit in and be friends and everyone sends him away and hides from him. Til he does one useful thing, and everything is supposed to be better. Presumably he will then forget all the rejection and become "acceptable" to his society.

I do have DCs newly diagnosed with SEND who struggle with social rejection and isolation, though, so I may be being over sensitive. I can't watch it ever again.

Rafflesway · 14/11/2019 18:55

Good point alsohuman!

Never considered the cuddly toy and associated product sales. Bet they are far from cheap too.

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 18:57

The cuddly toy’s £15, I didn’t check out the boots.

Nubbled · 14/11/2019 18:57

He lit a Christmas pud with snotty fire.

Lovely 🤮

Thunderpunt · 14/11/2019 19:03

Sorry but the Argos one beats the JL one into a cocked hat, who doesn't love a kid on a set of drums - she is bloody Ace!

flowery · 14/11/2019 19:10

”I went into JL today, they’re selling cuddly dragon soft toys and matching children’s wellies. No altruism involved in the making of that ad!”

Of course they are. Every year there’s a whole load of branded merchandise tying in with the Christmas ad. They are a commercial enterprise!

CherryPlum · 14/11/2019 19:18

I like the 'ye olden days' setting, the Christmassy feel, and the overall message, BUT the dragon looks so digital and cartoony, out of place, and makes the message seem so forced. The lighting up the xmas pudding thing is weak. You can picture the Comms team coming up with the idea.

I don't like the singers voice (whoever he is).

That must have gone well last year, I wonder how many pianos they shifted.

egontoste · 14/11/2019 19:40

Just watched it.

Proper guffaws going on here - love it Grin Grin

Tricorne · 14/11/2019 19:43

Not a patch on the bear and the hare one a few years ago. Sob.
