What book series might my nearly 9yo like?

Dd is nearly 9. Loves Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates and Harry Potter but says she would like to try something else before moving on to next HP (she is halfway through book 4). She likes books that are in series rather than one offs, and she has not liked Roald Dahl at all and is a bit meh about David Walliams. All suggestions welcome please

Was about to suggest David Walliams, never mind lol!
Have you tried David Baddiel books?
He has some good children's ones

WaddIelikeapenguin · 11/11/2019 01:18

For the HP love
Narnia
Chrestomanci
Dark is rising

Warrior cats
Rangers apprentice
Lady Grace Mysteries

The trilogy 'His Dark Materials' by Phillip Pullman. An adventure series with a young girl as the heroine. The tv adaptation is currently showing on BBC.

The Treehouse series are great fun. My DD also loves the Phoebe and the Unicorn comic series and the Babysitters Club in comic form.

Kiwiinkits · 11/11/2019 04:26

Warriors series (it’s about cats). My DD read them all, she loved them.

ifigoup · 11/11/2019 04:40

Arthur Ransome (Swallows and Amazons, then about ten lesser-known sequels).

Brian Jacques’ Redwall series.

Would she like other school stories? The Worst Witch and that kind of thing?

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and sequels.

She might be a bit young still, but I started reading Antonia Forest around that age.

I second the Susan Cooper suggestion. Start with Over Sea, Under Stone and see how she gets on.

I also started to get into Agatha Christie, Isaac Asimov and various sci-fi around then.

How to train your dragon series by Cressida Cowell.

Jaqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather

OpheliaBee · 11/11/2019 06:25

I loved Jacqueline Wilson at about that age. Tbh I’d probably still quite enjoy reading her books now!

Also A Series of Unfortunate Events. I got into The Princess Diaries around then, although the content does get a bit more ‘grown up’ as the books progress so probably more end of year 5/year 6 appropriate. Mallory Towers or similar? I know Enid Blyton is a bit (!!) problematic but these were really great when I was that age!

Tulipsinmyvase · 11/11/2019 06:38

The worst which
Horrid Henry

parrotonmyshoulder · 11/11/2019 06:40

My series loving daughter was devouring Enid Blyton at 8. All the school series’, ‘Mystery of’, Famous Five etc.

captainpantbeard · 11/11/2019 06:41

The Spiderwick Chronicles and The Search for Wondla (both same author)

Deminism · 11/11/2019 08:55

Thanks all. She has turned down all the Enid Blyton’s I have tried to give her and all the books I loved eg Ballet Shoes. She has read The Worst Witch and likes Horrid Henry on tv but not the books. She has read some Jacqueline Wilson but maybe I should try her on more as they were the ones for younger kids.

I think His Dark Materials probably a bit hard at moment for her.

But will check all these out thank you.

DoorbellsSleighbellsSchnitzel · 11/11/2019 09:06

My DD loves the Murder Most Unladylike series, and the Witch Wars series.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 11/11/2019 09:06

I loved A Series of Unfortunate Events at that age. I was also keen on Deltora Quest, the Troll Fell series and, Jackie French novels (most are one off novels though).

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 11/11/2019 09:27

The accidental pirates
Redwall
Goth girl
Murder most ladylike
The mysterious Benedict society
Tilly and the book wanderers
The last wild
Look at Katherine Rundell, abi elphinstone, Sophie Anderson, Kiran Millwood Hargrave, Juliet forest for some fabulous authors with brilliant female leads too although not necessarily a series.

Meltedicicle · 11/11/2019 09:34

DD will be 9 next week and enjoyed Nina Bawden’s Carrie’s War and Peppermint Pig over the summer. She also loves watching Horrible Histories so I got her the book box set which has gone down really well too. Another vote for Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Morpurgo too.

mangomama91 · 11/11/2019 09:36
