What book series might my nearly 9yo like?

Dd is nearly 9. Loves Wimpy Kid, Tom Gates and Harry Potter but says she would like to try something else before moving on to next HP (she is halfway through book 4). She likes books that are in series rather than one offs, and she has not liked Roald Dahl at all and is a bit meh about David Walliams. All suggestions welcome please

How to Train Your Dragon, and Cressida Cowell's newer Wizards Of Once series.

The Eddy Stone series? There's quite a lot of magical stuff in it if she likes Harry Potter - and it takes the main characters off to different worlds (pirate ships, other planets, etc. It's funny too. Easier to read than Narnia and the classic children's novels.

Dd1 (10, year 6) sounds similar in her book tastes, she has enjoyed Dork Diaries this year and A Series of Unfortunate Events but also last year loved Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books, the Elspeth Hart Series by Sarah Forbes and the Ottoline series of books by Chris Riddell.

Dd has very recently turned 9 and I’ve bought her the Artemis fowl books this Christmas, as well as some ‘you choose’ fairytales which look right up her street!

Book series she has enjoyed so far:

David walliams books
David Baddiel books
13 Story Treehouse series
Hetty Feather (Jacqueline Wilson, then goes onto Sapphire Battersea and then Emerald Star)
Dork Diaries series by Rachel Renee Russell
Princess Diaries Series by Meg Cabot

There's a Nevermoor series by Jessica Morgan too that your Dd might like. DS2 really loves it.

He also loved the larklight trilogy by Phillip reeve. He liked mortal engines too, but the next book in that series seemed to turn into angsty romance and he was not up for that (he was 9 when he read it).

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/11/2019 10:15

Marcus Sedgwick's Raven Series (starts with Flood and Fang).

PurpleGhost · 11/11/2019 10:18

The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan is good.

Deminism · 11/11/2019 11:19

These are great thank you.

Nine is exactly the right age to begin the (60 volumes) Chalet School series. Several of the earlier books are available in paperback. ((And the MN thread can direct you to sources for the entire set.)

Ohffs66 · 11/11/2019 11:27

Nancy Drew? I still reread some of mine 30 years on!

CakeMonster100 · 11/11/2019 11:31

Ones that are currently popular in our house with a female main character are the train to impossible places series by P.G. Bell (it's a new series so we're crossing our fingers for more books!) And a series by Lauren St John: the white giraffe, dolphin song, the last leopard and the elephants tale. I've not seen it in bookshops but eBay came to my rescue after we found the first two in a charity shop and then needed the rest.

BlueChampagne · 11/11/2019 12:24

Archie Greene (early Potter)
A Series of Unfortunate Events

My 9 year old DS has just finished reading the whole Harry Potter series & is now about to start The Hobbit.

Growingexponentially · 11/11/2019 14:02

My 8yo is currently enjoying the Magic Misfits series by Neil Patrick Harris. There are only 3 books so far though.

sproutsandparsnips · 11/11/2019 14:10

My nine year old is very difficult to please but is really enjoying the Wizards of once series.

Emmapeeler1 · 11/11/2019 14:18

Following. Most of the books my 9yo has enjoyed have already been mentioned. But, if she has turned down Enid Blyton try her on the Mystery Five Find Outers series, as my DD and all her friends without fail loved those, even when they had turned down others. They also have them on audio book now.

Deminism · 11/11/2019 14:52

I loved the five find outers so much as a child
