What do people think about stealing a glass from a bar?

Was on holiday with friends recently and one of the group stole a glass from the bar - as they liked the glass. The group was a bit divided afterwards when we found out. I was in the camp where it was thought to be wrong... and a bit cringey..what do others think?

It's theft. Plain and simple.

ScreamingCosArgosHaveNoRavens · 10/11/2019 11:30

I'm in your camp.

In my experience, if you want a particular glass, the pub will often give it to you if you ask, in return for a small donation into their charity box.

Oldraver · 10/11/2019 11:30

It's twatty, no one needs to steal a glass. I would probably think someone that did this a twat but no more.

WildRosie · 10/11/2019 11:31

I'm sure the bar won't miss it, provided not everybody half-inches their glassware, but it's still stealing which isn't on.

ScarlettDarling · 10/11/2019 11:32

I couldn't get too worked up about it...not something I'd do but not something I feel strongly about.

EggysMom · 10/11/2019 11:32

I thought most people had done this ... We have rather a few!

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 10/11/2019 11:34

I've been known to do this on more than one occasion when under the influence 🤷‍♀️ guess that makes me a twat then!

magicstar1 · 10/11/2019 11:34

I’ve never done it. If I really like a glass I ask the barman can I buy it. They either give it for a donation or for free. I just can’t steal them.

TwattingDog · 10/11/2019 11:35

Meh, I think most of our glasses have been half inched from pubs.

SuzieBishop · 10/11/2019 11:55

I’ve done this on many occasions 😂

Kyvia · 10/11/2019 11:57

It’s stealing and twatty. Yes I’ve done it, when young and drunk, which is no excuse but an explanation. Young (or immature) drunk people are twatty.

chipsandpeas · 10/11/2019 11:57

pubs expect it and usually get their glasses free from the brand anyway

JassyRadlett · 10/11/2019 11:58

If just five people per night nicked a glass, the pub would pretty quickly have to fork out to replace them.

Pretty shitty behaviour.

PeterRabbitt · 10/11/2019 12:02

We had pubs for years, it was expected and like a pp said we very rarely had to pay for any glasses other than highball tumblers for spirits. No-one ever stole them but they were always getting dropped!

gamerwidow · 10/11/2019 12:06

It's a bit twatty but at the low end of misdemeanours. People do stupid stuff when they are drunk and while this isn't 'right' I wouldn't leave a friendship because of it.

pumpkintree · 10/11/2019 12:07

I used to run a pub. We used to get glasses nicked daily especially if a brand has new glasses, but half pint glasses were most popular. If I like a glass when out I always ask if they say no I accept it. Some will ask for a few quid and I'm always happy to pay for it. When I had my pub if asked I would give it to them, even wash it out after there drink and wrap in paper.

Doodoobear · 10/11/2019 12:07

It's expected, and it happens quite a lot especially with the nicer glasses. We get branded glasses from the brewery that supplies us and usually it's like pulling teeth getting more unless a rebranding happens, but we buy things like wine and gin glasses. I'm more likely to stop people leaving with one because the council and police get annoyed by a lot of broken glass around venues where people walk out with a glass then chuck it when they've finished.

Do hope that none of you that don't see it as a big deal don't start getting arsey with bar staff when they've run out of a type of glass that the drink you want is supposed to be served in, because they've all been nicked as well as broken 🤔

Boireannachlaidir · 10/11/2019 12:09

If you're all young & immature in your outlook then yeah i can totally see why stealing glasses has its appeal.

If you're old enough to know better then it's a bit pathetic really. Agree with @Kyvia

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 10/11/2019 12:10

"Do hope that none of you that don't see it as a big deal don't start getting arsey with bar staff when they've run out of a type of glass that the drink you want is supposed to be served in, because they've all been nicked as well as broken"

Is this even something that people care about?

Sgtmajormummy · 10/11/2019 12:11

I asked to buy a special glass in a pub (some sort of dragon that DS liked on it). The barman said I could have it if I gave a donation to the RNLI collecting box.
A fiver to a good cause, a washed glass and a clean conscience!

My freebie glasses are from Nutella, BTW!

Lessthanzero · 10/11/2019 12:11

I worked in a pub years ago. We got a new draft pump installed and the brewery gave us some nice branded glasses. They were all gone in a week.

It's no real loss to the pub I suppose in that circumstance. But nicking glasses is a bit pickey. Whether I judged the person would depend on the pub they stole it from. Big chain place I wouldn't care, independent place it's bang out of order.

Doodoobear · 10/11/2019 12:14

@SlightlyStaleCocoPops

Sadly yes, some people do care about it far too much! I've had people complain on a regular basis that I haven't served them in a branded glass, or say a gin goblet because I don't have any left, and used a generic pint glass or a tall tumbler instead.

Gwenhwyfar · 10/11/2019 12:16

Some illegal things are socially acceptable. This is one of them. Parking infractions and speeding too. Another good example is watching pirated films and TV.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 10/11/2019 12:16

We were at a pub recently and dh asked if he could buy the glass

The barman said yes if he made a donation

And he gave dh a nice clean one rather than the glass he had already used

Dh has been known to pinch the odd glass but he usually asks

YerAWizardHarry · 10/11/2019 12:17

I work in what would be considered a "classy" restaurant on the bar. We CONSTANTLY have to replace glasses due to people stealing them (and breakages of course) and it costs an absolute fortune. Guests moan when their drinks aren't in the "right" glass Envy but are happy to steal them
