What do people think about stealing a glass from a bar?

Was on holiday with friends recently and one of the group stole a glass from the bar - as they liked the glass. The group was a bit divided afterwards when we found out. I was in the camp where it was thought to be wrong... and a bit cringey..what do others think?

My ex used to do this I was so embarrassed when he did it. He even stole a milk jug from a cafe once. His lack of values and being a bad influence on our kids is the reason he is now my ex Grin

I used to run a student sports pub. We built it into the budget that most of the branded glasses, salt and pepper shakers, cutlery etc would go missing especially around sept.

Mothership4two · 10/11/2019 13:36

Agree twatty behaviour.

Stealth boasting about doing it is pretty cringeworthy too.

FrankenCat · 10/11/2019 14:08

I used to work in a bar. I'd have a set of 6 each at one point. I never used to steal them though, I'd tell the steward I was taking them first.

WildRosie · 10/11/2019 14:23

My Mum was a bit of a bugger for this, bless her. One hotel in Slovenia lost three brandy glasses in 1986 and a bar down the road two beer tankards.

At one of my local pubs, Guinness glasses are a particular target for tea leaves. They're welcome to them as far as I'm concerned as the latest ones look more like vases and are more suitable for gladioli than Guinness.

I like the old-fashioned Dema Tudor pint tankards which you have to buy anyway as no pubs I know still use them, apart from one where I keep my own.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/11/2019 14:27

The branded glasses are supplied free from the brewery/brand. So fair game imo.

The non branded glassware is purchased by the bar and taking them is theft.

Morgenrot · 10/11/2019 14:47

It's stealing

LucaFritz · 10/11/2019 14:51

Had this happen at a bar i worked at a while ago with the Gin Balloons everyone wanted on for at home so kept taking them but a case of them cost £60 so we put the price of G&T up to cover it and a sign saying why and it caused outrage from said thieves Hmm most places will have a box of glasses tucked away they don't use that they'll give you for free if you ask most of my local pubs give boxes of old ones away to people just starting out in their own homes etc

OldEvilOwl · 10/11/2019 14:51

I work in a coffee shop. Our milk jugs, ramekins & teaspoons are always going missing

JassyRadlett · 10/11/2019 15:05

So it’s ok to steal from a larger (perhaps - a lot of breweries are quite small these days) business? So ok to nick a glass in Tesco - that’s ‘fair game’?

You know this is built into margins somewhere right? Probably higher drink prices.

Sgtmajormummy · 10/11/2019 15:10

I worked in a pub and they were sent a free case of 500ml glasses instead of pint glasses. They were noticeably smaller (70 ml) and couldn’t be used for customers.
The regulars were told to help themselves. It might have avoided a few “losses”...

BlueCornsihPixie · 10/11/2019 15:17

It's stealing. It's also really cringy, it's the sort of thing you do when you're 18 (or more like 15) on your first visit to the pub.

If everyone did it that night the pub would have no glasses. Even if they've built it into their costings that just means the price of beer is more expensive so everyone else is paying. If the glass is 'free' the pub is still going to have to pay to replace it.

I dont really know why anyone wants a pub/restaurant glass anyway when glasses are like a pound in sainsburies but if you want a Guinness glass/Stella glass/fancy gin glass buy it like everyone else has to.

mindutopia · 10/11/2019 15:22

They often get the glasses as promotional items. I really doubt they care. My mum once bought glasses and place mats Blush from our local pub because she liked them so much (she’s not British so didn’t realise how much the rest of us were cringing). I do have some quite proper posh older relatives who have been known to steal more than a glass from a pub (I know of at least one Christmas tree that went home with them - they always returned it all, just enjoyed a challenge in their 80s).

mbosnz · 10/11/2019 15:36

I find it juvenile and tacky.

We used to have a pub, and a rugby team passing through thought it would be hilarious to all pocket their glasses.

My mother stormed onto the bus - all five foot nothing of her (they'd been right pillocks and downright harassed her as she worked at the bar), and wouldn't let them leave until she'd got every single one back.

susiep66 · 10/11/2019 16:02

If I was running a tea shop where everyone was served their tea in vintage cups and saucers, you would be banned pretty quickly.
I imagine that if you stay at an hotel, you would be the one who cleared out all the complementary tea/coffee/sugar/bath gel, and probably the towel and dressing gown as well. Now everyone has to pay more because of your thieving.

Northernsoullover · 10/11/2019 16:06

I've come home with all sorts when drunk. Glasses, a posh candle from a wine bar and beer towels. I could be a bit of a twat in my twenties. I have matured and I no longer drink.

Thefemalekeithrichards · 10/11/2019 16:07

Okay call the cops - I stole one of the olive boats from Prezzo once I still have it and I love it - sorry please don’t judge me too harshly 😐

avocadoze · 10/11/2019 16:11

It’s stealing, and it’s depressing reading the stories people tell themselves to justify it, so they don’t have to acknowledge that they are thieves.

EggysMom · 10/11/2019 16:26

Would you steal from costa because you want a free mug?

Given the prices that they and Starbucks charge, damn right I would and have

JassyRadlett · 10/11/2019 16:29

Oh you liked it. That obviously makes it ok.

Given the prices that they and Starbucks charge, damn right I would and have

Wonder if it would be cheaper for all of us if not for the shoplifters.

Wintersnow234 · 10/11/2019 16:33

Someone above mentioned that alcohol changes things. But I wonder if it just magnifies the way you are or think ie if you would never ever steal when you’re sober, you still wouldn’t after a few drinks ?

Bluetac19 · 10/11/2019 16:34

People wouldn't do it in a cafe. It's the same thing. Theft is theft.

goodwinter · 10/11/2019 16:40

I've worked in hospitality and, as bar staff, I didn't care - it's not exactly the crime of the century, especially for a big company.

However, I think it's pretty trashy behaviour on a personal levvel.

theSnuffster · 10/11/2019 16:50

One of my favourite glasses came from a pub, several years ago. I said how much I liked it and my BIL or SIL (can't remember which) took it and gave it to me later.

Thefemalekeithrichards · 10/11/2019 16:52

@JassyRadlett

I didn’t say it made it okay did I ? - I said call the cops
In fact I’m going to turn myself in now - no fun being a fugitive for the last 15 years anyway
