Has anyone ever found a time capsule?

How old was it? When was it from and what was in it?

I've never found one but I'm thinking of doing one one day and burying it in the garden.

My dad is in the building trade and his crew leave small packages within walls containing eg. A newspaper, money, a small tool etc.

Not found but we have put on in our house which will be found someday

minniemoll · 10/11/2019 10:20

I found one in my current house, but it was from the previous owners and had only been put there about ten years ago, so it wasn't very exciting. I did ask my builders to put it back but they forgot.

Don't forget the Blue Peter disaster OP. They dug up their time capsule and it was soaked through and destroyed 😓

I vaguely remember the Blue Peter disaster. Bet that was so frustrating!

I found an old cigarette box and some coins in the wall of my house when we had our extension.

Has anyone ever found a time capsule?

Oh I love the idea of builders putting little time capsules in walls!

Never found a time capsule but have found writing on walls. We moved into a house that my teen's friend had lived in over a decade earlier and they had her growth charted on a wall up to about 3 years. We found it when wallpapering so she came over to see it. We also found a load of child's writing on a wall that came up in the paint when I put a damp seal treatment on. Looks like she had been a little scamp and written all over her walk in cupboard wall at one time.

30+ years ago DSis and I were allowed to write all over our undecorated plastered bedroom walls and I assume it's still there for someone to find. Probably just games of tic tac toe and declarations of love for New Kids On The Block's Jordan Knight. I do remember putting a few jokes on there copied from DSis's joke book too.

I've also come across newspapers left in floor boards. Nothing older than the 80's though. I think that one is more common.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 10/11/2019 15:04

I never twigged that the newspapers, cigarette packet and match box we found in our house were left on purpose Shock We found papers from 1969 under the carpet in the extension that was built in the 60's. Funny thing is, the people who built the extension sold the house in the 70's, and the next owners hardly changed a thing because we've had the children who grew up here and left in the 70's come round and be like "OMG those are my mums curtains! I can't believe this is the same carpet, we put that down in 1960-ish?" (These visits were before we started renovating btw Wink )

Yes, I also thought of the Blue Peter one. They made such a huge deal about it and everything was just soaked through and pretty uninteresting all those years later. It was such a letdown.

Dislocatedeyeballs · 10/11/2019 15:15

I found a message in a bottle once on Folkestone beach it was a plastic bottle though and absolutely filthy I couldn't open it so left it there! Why?? My biggest regret in life is leaving it there :(

Hecateh · 10/11/2019 16:16

I have a void under my floor in this house that I have just had built in the garden of my original. I've put a trunk down there with plans in, history of the original house, which was built for my family in 1950. Newspapers, photos and a bottle of wine for fun.

I suspect it won't be found for a minimum of 25 years (which gets me to 90 Grin). And maybe not for many years after.

Sinittasdancers · 10/11/2019 17:12

I put an envelope with photos and a letter about me and my family between the floorboards in my bedroom when I was about ten. Can't remember what the letter said but I'm sure it was pretty boring! I guess it won't be found unless major work is done so probably not until I've been dead for some time! I hope whoever finds if is interested enough to find out who I was - I guess that census records will still be as accessible as they are now.

redexpat · 10/11/2019 17:23

There's an episode of ipm where they track down a time capsule in the post office, and then open it and read the letter, which is spookily prophetic.
