Off to Amsterdam soon. Just booked a weekend in Seville for January. Got an absolute bargain flight.
Where are you all off to next?

@orangeteal we've decided not to go abroad until the youngest is older mainly because of it just being a logistical nightmare with pushchairs, car seats etc. I also don't like the idea of them being unrestrained on a plane

orangeteal · 10/11/2019 10:17

@OrangeSwoosh absolutely, by the time we went for the first time we had stopped using push chairs, potty training done, not napping, not a struggle to feed etc, basically not a slave to a routine anymore. Abroad with a baby or toddler is not my idea of fun, personally!

Salou for a week in late April with my best friend.

Then 11 days in Wales in the summer with my dss , 24 and 12, showing them all the places I used to go when I holidayed there as a child Grin

I'd love to go on more trips but sadly, until I win the lottery, funds are limited.

Hoppinggreen · 10/11/2019 10:29

We usually go to Spain in Feb but Dd is going skiing with school so I’m not sure if we will go without her.
We are going to a nice spa hotel near Durham for the weekend in a few weeks time for my birthday

GreyGardens88 · 10/11/2019 10:31

I have a Friday off in December, flying to Oslo at about half 6 in the morning then back at around 9pm sunday night. Doing something similar in April but with Amsterdam. Then longer breaks next summer

ReginaGeorgeous · 10/11/2019 10:39

Three nights in a lodge with a hot tub in the Peak District at the end of January, long weekend to Disneyland Paris in March, 2 weeks in Tenerife for the Easter holidays and two weeks in Menorca in July all booked so far. We will also go over to Prague at some point to visit family.

notso · 10/11/2019 11:14

I love reading about other peoples holiday plans. I'd love to be able to know exactly where I wanted to go!
We can never decide because we all want different things and don't really prioritise them. I can never shake the feeling the money could be used better on something else and find them a bit stressful if I'm honest.

SapphireSeptember · 10/11/2019 11:14

I'm in London for a gig at the weekend (staying overnight) then another one lined up in April and then four days of LARPing madness in August, if that doesn't clash with the week on the Isle of Wight that my mum is planning. Smile

Travelfan1 · 10/11/2019 11:15

Some great breaks and holidays booked here. I’ve got lots booked already for next year
Canaries, Portugal Spain, Ireland, couple of uk weekend breaks.

Got a cotswalds weekend break in January with DH as well as the Seville trip. Booked through Travelzoo. Cheap as chips.

I work PT and DH from home mostly, so we are able to take better advantage of cheap hols/ breaks.
Student dd coming to canaries and Ireland with us. Older DD who works full time coming to Berlin with me in spring.

Just coming to the end of our 4 day break at our caravan in N Yorks
So back at some point next week and the weeks after until it closes end of November
Then Tenerife for two weeks before Christmas.

January we don’t go anywhere.
I wasn’t well last week...norovirus..and we spent ten days in our own home...the longest since ..errr January this year.
It was quite a novelty.
February we often spend a few weekends at the caravan and then three weeks in Tenerife in March.
Purely for health reasons naturally

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 10/11/2019 11:31

Am in Barbados with husband right now, with another week to go. Next holiday is Easter, Cape Verde with my 16 year old daughter.

wheretonow123 · 10/11/2019 11:34

I am all for taking breaks especially in our own country but we really need to be cognisant of the effects of the levels of air travel on the environment.

I heard on a recent report that only about 3% of they worlds population travel by air on a regular basis but that in this country the AVERAGE is about 6 flights a year.

In my opinion people should travel abroad by air no more than 3 times a year - of course everyone likes their once in a lifetime losing haul holidays but we do need to note the following

Travelfan1 · 10/11/2019 11:42

To whoever asked, our flights are with Ryanair. Think with priority boarding it was around £35 pp return.

@ Chocolate hoping to go to Cape Verde around October / November next year. Will not book it till much closer to the time as I find prices come down (with tui) nearer the time.

Been back from Antigua a week now, Seville in February.
Need to book more!

One of the biggest impacts of the Brexit debate is the total lack of debate regarding ancillary (but ultimately even more important) issues such as climate change.

The political parties are so busy arguing and developing strategies around Brexit there is v little opportunity to discuss strategies around CC and also to look at the areas that will need massive investment to offset the effects on a local basis.

I hope that I don't come across as a crank but when I read above of people having multiple holidays abroad and the following up by bringing the grandchildren to Disney I have to ask will these self same grandchildren be thanking our generation and the older generation for us ignoring the warning signs as we are doing at the moment.

I think the political parties should consider an air travel tax that allows some travel but ramps up as people take multiple flights a year

Eg
1st 5 hours flying for each person - no tax
5 - 10 hours per year - £100
10-15 hours per year £200
15-20 hours per year £400

The above wont effect the majority of us and will allow some flights without the tax but will tax those flying every month or two.

Travelfan1 · 10/11/2019 12:19

Go for it Swishy Lots if good deals/ cheap flights around atm.

Reims Christmas market end of the month, Spain with work in January; maybe a chance of another weekend in London and CP in May, before a week in Sorrento in August.

HeronLanyon · 10/11/2019 12:38

wheretonow agree. Just yesterday had long discussion about why on Earth when we book flights there is t an easy way to offset (or not). It took me quite a bit of digging around to find out how to do this for upcoming flight. Also feel strongly there should be option to donate to range of local charities - eg booked to Malaysia several years ago when the penalties (including death) for lgbt people were increased. Cancelled and let hotel know why - they said they were tearing hair out because of political effect on tourism. Would like to go. Would like to donate for change. All destinations not just ‘western’ values etc. Deffo around human rights abuses. Am doing this voluntarily for upcoming holiday but again took a bit of sorting out !
Obvs not all would be interested or be able to afford but many would I think.

orangeteal · 10/11/2019 12:42

@wheretonow123 if it wasn't Brexit it would be something else, no government wants to tackle climate change, it's too "long term" they want to spend money on quick wins to maintain their own political careers. Perhaps as people realise it's less of a long term issue it'll pick up pace, but while it is less visible as an issue directly for this generation I think it'll really struggle.

I appreciate I'm a hypocrite in this, I do tend to fly annually.

Travelfan1 · 10/11/2019 12:47

Has anyone been to iceland as a solo traveller? I’m thinking of doing a four day trip next August. Tend to do one solo holiday a year? I know it’s very expensive. Is August a good time?

wheretonow123 · 10/11/2019 13:53

Heron, orange, I do agree with you both. I used to travel multiple times a year through work but didn't realise the effects at that time. Truth be told if I was in the same job it would be very hard to stop without losing my job.

Our society and business is so intertwined with air travel that is difficult to reduce but I hear more and more companies talking about conducting meetings and training by skype. Etc but its not always possible.

I don't want to hijack this thread but it was just the scale of some of the people travelling that made me wonder. Maybe its still only a few but I think foreign travel of more than say 4 times abroad a year should be reconsidered.

Therealjudgejudy · 10/11/2019 13:54

New York on the 23rd December for 7 days.

Helsinki in January

Spain in April for a hen do

Bali in June Smile

wheretonow123 · 10/11/2019 14:07

Ourselves we are going to France early June next year. We did think about fly drive but decided to go by ferry fro a few reasons (not necessarily environmentalSmile).

I have one short haul for a gig myself and that's it. My daughter has plans to go to US next summer but hope she can join us in France also.

ElloBrian · 10/11/2019 14:07

Travelfan - I would suggest that a small independent travel group would be the most efficient use of your time in Iceland if you’re only going for 4 days. You can get around really easily, they pack a lot in but it is a lot more personal than a big bus tour group. There are loads of operators, Exodus and Intrepid are both well known and reliable.

I am going to Zagreb for a long weekend next weekend. Then I have two weeks in Mexico in Jan. Woohoo! Have recently bought a book about the best European rail journeys so I think I will try and do some of that kind of thing next year. I love sleeper trains!

Dowser · 10/11/2019 14:51

I go abroad for one reason only
The vitamin d my body makes from the sunshine and to escape the cold wet conditions we have in northern uk from end September till April or beyond
Believe me..if I could get the warmth and sunshine I need I wouldn’t do it
Especially after the flight from hell last month when even the pilot admitted that was the worst turbulence he’d encountered this year
Added to the lightning strike we had when airborne last year..believe me it’s going to take some strong medecine to get me on that plane next month
