Our twins started primary school in August and we've just had parents evening, as predicted they are pretty far behind their peers.

They were born 10 weeks early, have always been 12-18 months behind for pretty much everything. Had physio, ot, salt etc.

They're doing great physically and getting there emotionally but we're being pushed to encourage counting, blending words etc. I honestly work with them using different strategies but they just aren't there, what the fuck can I do?

Can you defer a year? Maybe a bit late now they're there, and maybe you already have? My DD is Feb-born so I'll have to decide whether to defer or not, but I'm pretty sure if there are other factors, you can apply for deferral in any case.

They’ve been in school for 3 months, how far behind can they really be given 3 months if formal education (I’m questioning the teacher who has told you this btw, not you).

Tbh I’d just not worry about it, they’ll catch up when ready in the meantime I’d be asking the school what additional support they can offer in class etc to help their learning. At this age it all sits on a spectrum, some kids read, write and count more quickly than others - it really does even out in the end but the school need to relax a bit from pressuring P1 children.

How old are they? I'd be inclined to ask about taking them out and repeating their pre school year.
