Has anyone ever got stolen bikes back?

My sons and husbands bikes have been stolen from our garage Sad I am keeping a look out on eBay/gumtree and have reported to the police but wondered if anyone had ever managed to get stolen bikes back? I’m not very hopeful they will turn up and they were £££ and not covered by insurance which really sucks tbh.

Only had 1 bike stolen (out of 12 over the years). The idiot was on CCTV and known to the local police as a serial bike thief so was arrested and convicted. Never saw a penny of compensation though.

Hmm - so sad that it’s so easy for these people to take these things. Going to have a big eBay sesh at the weekend and raise some money to replace them. Hope it was worth it to the burglars Hmm

My DH got his back a year later. A policeman saw someone on a bike that he just knew was stolen and took it off him. The frame number identified the shop my DH bought it from and the shop had records of the purchaser!

Yes, I accosted the thief as he tried to get on a train with my stolen bike. He flatly denied that he had just stolen it but I refused to let him go and started to dial 999 so he ran away Hmm. It was pure chance that he was getting on the same train as me and I happened to realise it was my bike.

DH found his stolen bike in a second hand bike shop, again they denied it was dodgy and told him to bugger off so he insisted that they took off the seat and there in the tube was a ice of paper with his name and address on it. They handed it back but didn’t apologise.

My brother saw a courier riding his stolen, custom-built bike with unusual imported bike frame. The courier was wearing a bag with the company name on it. My brother went there, rang the police and got his bike back. He’d already got the insurance for this bike which was over a thousand pounds back in the nineties. He told the insurance company what happened and they sold the bike back to him for a hundred pounds.

Some youths broke into the store at our local bike track and took all the bikes. I put out a call on Facebook and was contacted by someone who found one in their garden and then others started to appear in odd places. Never got them all back but they weren't much good to anyone as they are fixed wheel bikes without gears or brakes!

I’m sorry OP, it’s a horrible thing to happen. A neighbour’s bike was stolen and turned up a few weeks (maybe a couple of months?) later when the police raided a house in relation to something totally unrelated and found it.

DO you have a branch of CAsh Convertors or Cash in Hand in your town? Might be worth a look in there.

SKMCR · 08/11/2019 23:05

Yes. Drove round the rough scumbag estate in a van one evening and saw the little shit on it.

Yess we got a tip off that it was in a bike shop. It was and we got it back.

june2007 · 08/11/2019 23:09

I say bike shp it was a cash converters type place.

FauxFox · 08/11/2019 23:28

I’ve left details at the local pawn shop so maybe they will turn up - I am suspiciously checking every bike I see atm Confused

Not personally, but I do know of people who have. Usually it has been bikes that are a bit unusual or modified in some way so they have been easy to identify. When the thieves have tried to flog them, someone in the local cycling community has known who they belong to. Have you contacted all the cycling clubs in your area? I'm an admin for a club FB page and we get quite a few requests to put posts on about stolen bikes locally, which I happily do. Might be worth trying to get the word out on your locality that way.
It is so upsetting when things like this happen. Can you definitely not claim anything on your house insurance even if it is only part of the value? I hope you get them back though.I would be gutted if anyone took any of mine
