What Xbox should I get?

Will be buying for Xmas for dc but I’m not sure which one to get? I’m hoping to try to get a deal on Black Friday.

From what I understand there is one that you don’t need disks for the game, all online and one that has both? What are disadvantages of both? With the one you don’t need disks for, do you always have to be connected to the internet? Or is that just to download the games?

Are they both the same in terms of parental settings?

Tia.

I wouldn't have a machine without a disc drive. Why take away the option to play dvds?

Why don't to read some of the reviews online for both and decide then?

Personally I like a physical disc. Means I can use the same game in different machines. Handy if one breaks.

Wonderingwhyme · 07/11/2019 15:42

Ok thanks. Forgot they were DVD players too, I could get rid of my old crappy one.

How does the wiring work? We already have the switch cables in the tv, would we have to unplug it and replug etc each time they want to change which one they want to play on?

gamerchick · 07/11/2019 15:44

Well yeah, they're not the same wires. Unless you have another hdmi port to plug it into.

ActualHornist · 07/11/2019 16:06

Defo get the disc one. Means you can buy second hand games as well.

You can get a splitter if your tv only has one hdmi port.

We’ve got an Xbox one s and Xbox one x? I think? One is better than the other but I’ll be damned if I can tell the difference.

Wonderingwhyme · 07/11/2019 16:07

No just one hdmi port. Will need to work out how best to sort that as there isn’t room behind the tv for them to get behind to do it themselves. I lean over the top. May have to pull it out. Are there just two options, Xbox one? There aren’t any other ones? One is just downloads one is disks and download?

There is the Xbox One S, which is the one to get.

Then there's the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, without the DVD player - skip that. It's not any cheaper (rrp is, but you know what retailers are like) and it limits you to not buying 2nd hand disks.

There's also the Xbox One X, which is considerably more expensive because it's got fancier graphics. You won't need this as your TV isn't 4k (I can tell because you've only got one HDMI!).

Since you've only got one HDMI, you'll be wanting an autoswitcher so you can plug both Xbox and Switch in - I've been using these for years:

Xbox One S 1TB - has the disk drive which will also play DVD, BluRay & 4K disks

Xbox One S 1TB All Digital Edition - as above but with no disk drive

Xbox One X - latest version but up to £200 more. Unless you have a 4K TV then avoid.

Personally, I'll be buying the Xbox One S 1TB (first one on the list above) this year.

We got an extension type hdmi which is a bit like and extension socket. You can plug 3 hdmis in and flick a switch to pick which source you want

Thanks so much everyone, that was so helpful. I really appreciate it.

Can I just pop back to ask a question? I’ve seen a deal for xbox one x 1tb, do they have disk drive?

Sorry and also what is a gold subscription and what’s a game pass? What do we need to they can access whatever it is they need to access? Do you pay monthly/yearly?

I’m online ready to buy today, if I can get a good deal on the x should I get that over the s?

OP posts:
Hwory · 29/11/2019 09:04

If you can get a good deal on the X I would as you can always get a better TV down the line and make use of the 4K features.

Xbox live gold is the subscription you need if you want to play online multiplayer games (fortnite, call of duty(18) etc)

The game pass is a subscription service to play from a library of games. Useful if you don’t have a library of games and aren’t interested in reselling / replaying games.

If you must buy one now, get the one with the disk player. If it isn't vital to get one now, wait until next year as there is a new one coming out that will play all 360 & Xbox 1 games plus will have a much bigger memory. I have had to buy ds a hard drive as the memory on his was so full he was having to delete games.

IVEgotthetinselBITCHES · 29/11/2019 09:30

I have bought my 6 year old the digital one, she will only play one or two games and one of those was included. She already has a dvd player and we have three other consoles in the house should she really want to play a game on a disk. I figure in a couple of years when she may be getting into swapping games with friends etc she will either also want a newer consoles or it will have broken as they dont last forever. I think the digital is a good starter console

Wonderingwhyme · 29/11/2019 11:20

I’m going to get the standard, not the digital only as I can use as a DVD player as my one is crap.

This may be a stupid question but With physical disks, they won’t take storage up will they? We have a switch and it has to have a memory card in it as it got full.

Can you not buy one thing to access online stuff? Do you have to have the game pass thing if you are buying games?

OP posts:
Hwory · 29/11/2019 11:49

The physical disks do take up storage as you have to install them but unlike the switch it has an internal memory that doesn’t need you to purchase a memory card.

To play online you need a subscription- you can pay this monthly or buy several months in one go.

The game pass is totally optional - it’s like streaming songs on Spotify rather than buying physical albums.
