Lush

I recently went in to Lush to look at shampoo bars etc (previously avoided due to the overpowering bath bomb smells) I was quite impressed with the fact you can take your pots back to be recycled and they've not used any new plastic for 6 years. I got a couple of bits and quite like them. I've since seen on here a lot of anti-lush things re ethics/politics - what am I missing?

i think it was to do with a window display they put up about the police? this link explains it better x

Blueuggboots · 07/11/2019 16:26

I found their shampoo bars made my scalp and face very spotty due to SLS.
I now use shampoo bars from the good soap company. Much nicer!

Yes, some fairly ill-judged publicity stuff and campaigns. As well as the above there was a day/weekend(?) when customers and passers by were encouraged to lipstick kiss the white T-shirts of the staff which was a bit cringe-making and probably led to a few clever circumventions like kissing a T-shirt not being worn by someone.
I like their stuff in the main. Often the less interesting or colourful things have a lot to recommend them (skincare etc), but find it a bit frustrating that many things are replaced in their range and not around for all that long.

The shampoo bars aren’t eco as they are 90% SLSs and parabens which are v harmful to the water course

tectonicplates · 07/11/2019 17:14

Their shops smell revolting and make a lot of people feel sick and/or get headaches.

ProseccoIsTheAnswerHere · 07/11/2019 17:14

I avoid because of their staff . Their patter is too much

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 17:23

The smell of the pal;ce is a marmite thing, some, like me, like it!

The shampoo bars aren’t eco as they are 90% SLSs and parabens which are v harmful to the water course Parabens? They are still working on getting rid of the last parabens they use but they hardly use any!

SLSs are also being phased out, I think only 50 ish of their products in total still contain any.

I'd agree that some of their campaigns have been weird, but their ingredients are continually heading in the right direction.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 07/11/2019 17:24

In fact, having just gone and read their blurb ALL shampoo bars are paraben free

Curlysusie · 07/11/2019 18:10

Thanks all. Very weird ad campaign Hmm

Lush fund campaigns that advocate violence and lawbreaking to get their point across. There are other places to buy your shampoo bars from.

Jiggles101 · 07/11/2019 18:20

I really like their products and actually I don't even mind how overly keen the staff are. I don't use the shampoo bars though, they don't feel like they clean my hair properly.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/11/2019 18:21

They did a bloody inspired window display involving a human in the place of a laboratory rabbit .

Lots of people complained because they felt it too graphic .

Of course if it happens behind closed doors where we cannot see it , then it doesn't matter does it ? Hmm

I could do without the very keen staff .
I like the smell
I like the pot recycling

Backinthebox · 08/11/2019 15:01

70isalimit I don’t agree with animal testing of cosmetics but I don’t agree with pipe bombs being sent in the post to pharmaceutical research scientists either. Lush have donated to some fairly sketchy organisations in the past that have had links with arsonists, bombers and grave desecraters. I buy shampoo bars from Soap and Soul, who do not test on animals, send out their products wrapped in recycled paper, and don’t fund criminals either.
