Dec '89 my then boyfriend got in a mood with me and put his foot on mine and twisted my violently. I ended up with a spiral fracture, which I refused surgery for, and had a cast from foot to groin for 8 weeks, followed by one below the knee for 4 years.
The only trouble it caused was 'sticking' when I moved it and I had to 'crack' it to enable full motion - it never hurt.
About 3-4 years ago I started getting swelling and pain in my ankle, and x-rays revealed osteoarthritis in both the ankle joint and foot.
I had a steroid injection a year ago, which worked brilliantly, and was in reduced pain for months.
I got referred back in June, when the pain started again, and had another ultrasound guided injection two and half weeks ago.
This time the pain never got better, but in fact worsened, particularly since last week. Usually the pain is worst when first getting up (from bed or sitting), and gets slightly easier with more movement... now it gets worse as I walk and I literally cannot even walk around shops without puffing and struggling.
I went to A&E streaming on Monday (couldn't get an emergency GP appt), and the dr noted that the area is swollen and hot. I had bloods and an x-ray. The x-ray showed nothing urgent, but the bloods showed a drop in my HB levels from 112 three months ago, to 95 now. So the Dr was more concerned with this.
Confident I hadn't got an infection from the injection (bloods were clear for markers), she asked my GP to refer me back to MSK, but it could take four months.
I don't know what to do. I haven't injured it, but the swelling is increasing.
I've tried to do the physio exercises (as advised to keep it mobile), but if I even try to put any weight on my toes my ankle gives way, and I scream in pain. Both inside and outside ankle bones are hidden by swelling.
I walk with a limp, but significantly am walking on the outer part of my foot, as when I try to put weight evenly it gives way, although the outside has significant swelling too.
It was NEVER as bad as this prior to the injection, but apparently they think I may have a sprain, due to swelling and heat (and mild redness), but it only happened after the injection.
I cannot sleep or even sit as it hurts (pain and feeling as if it's being crushed by a tight band).
I guess I'm being stupid and should suck it up, but I'm struggling to get my DD from school, and even pushing a hoover around is impossible (but desperately needed).
