Peacocks, the shop not the bird

I had an unsuitable / unwanted gift to take back to Peacocks today, with a gift receipt.

Having not been in a Peacocks for years I remembered why, the place is positively hideous! I spent 20 minutes desperately looking for something to buy so the money wouldn't get wasted, ended up buying DD lots of multipacks of knickers as there was just nothing there I wanted to buy.

I tried a few things on, the quality was terrible, the designs were dated, the place looked like a jumble sale and the staff were miserable and unhelpful.

Does anyone successfully shop there? I'm confused as to who their target audience is. Do you think they'll be the next high street fatality?

I've never been in a Peacocks but just wanted to say how much I loved the clarification in your thread title Grin

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 06/11/2019 21:57

It’s an awful store. I only go in when they have a sale to get joggers for DC and my son likes their men’s skinny jeans. (Only on sale though- not worth full price)

GetUpAgain · 06/11/2019 21:59

Their clothes are terrible but they do great seam free knickers and v good for teenagers undies as well.

rabbitwoman · 06/11/2019 22:00

Love peacocks!!! The jumper I wore today, in fact, is peacocks and got lots of compliments. Love their pyjamas, cheapo sports gear. My husband got a suit in there, looks fantastic ( that might just be him, though, swoon!!)

I don't see what's so bad, it's the same sort of standard as new look, or a giant TU or Florence and Fred?

Countrylifeornot · 06/11/2019 22:00

Well mustangsly I didn't want a bunch of angry ornithologists coming on and berating me for getting them excited about a thread Grin

I've had some good second hand clothes from there for my little girl.
Although I've not been tempted by them when I've gone in. Apart from pyjamas for children there nice

I'm going in there tomorrow to get bitty things for Christmas like a cup for my DD.

Jellykat · 06/11/2019 22:03

I buy my cotton knickers, and sporty bra tops in there, plus ive bought a few longline cotton tees in there that have lasted really well, oh and a couple of pairs of jeggings that have kept their shape.. So okay for basics.. wouldn't go for anything else though!

shinynewapple · 06/11/2019 22:03

I bought a hoody there the other week.

I do like their none-wire padded bras as they do them in proper sizing rather than the S, M, L sizing which is common to a lot of 'comfort' bra's.

Countrylifeornot · 06/11/2019 22:04

It just seemed to be worse quality than Primark, but much more expensive (I'm far from a label snob, I love a Primark rummage).
I was confused by the Ann Summers type scratchy nylon underwear, and the layout baffled me too.
Perhaps it's just my local one is shit?

I get stuff for the DCs there as its the only clothes shop on our high street, also for me things like vests and leggings. I had a lovely knitted hat from there last year and a summer cotton bag a couple of years ago too.

Iwantacookie · 06/11/2019 22:08

I like peacocks. We actually have one in our town. It's quite small but I always pop in if I'm passing.

Lunafortheloveogod · 06/11/2019 22:12

It’s the cheapest closest clothes shop to us, so I get vests, leggings, pj’s and the odd jumper or something else for me and bits for ds.. their baby/kids stuffs usually got something nice in it, and for all the quality isn’t the best he’s never in a size long enough to wear anything out. Their leggings last me just as long as more expensive ones too.

But some of the stuff that’s more pushed to the front is god awful. Seems to be a place for a rake or basics.

Poetryinaction · 06/11/2019 22:18

It's the only kids shop in our town and I love it. There's always a sale on so I get really cheap leggings and t shirts. And pick up work tops for myself. It always washes well and lasts.

Binglebong · 06/11/2019 22:20

I find them ok, you have to hunt a bit but there are nice items. I came to say great seam free knickers but a PP beat me to it! Although if they are the ones with lace they come apart a bit - the glue isn't great. But worth the sewing - so comfy!

Tableclothing · 06/11/2019 22:20

Never been in to a real one but bought a few maternity tops online a while back for £8 each and worn them on rotation since.

Binglebong · 06/11/2019 22:22

The soles on their shoes are too hard though - no bend.

SignOnTheWindow · 06/11/2019 22:27

I had no idea Peacocks still existed! Ooh, I'm all nostalgic now!

SunshineDays2019 · 06/11/2019 22:48

I agree, OP, it's bloody awful. I also loved your thread title!

wineisnecessary · 06/11/2019 23:01

Yep rubbish they'll be next to go into administration.
I remember years ago catching a shop lifter in there who blatantly put things in bags . I was like to the shop assistant who I couldn't believe hadn't noticed you know those 2 are nicking . They chased after them and they dropped the stuff . The next time I when if they had a security guard on the door. Not been in for years though .

MissCharleyP · 06/11/2019 23:10

I get things like pjs, jeggings, tights, the odd t-shirt. They do dressing gowns (got one last time I went in) that are pretty identical to the Victoria’s Secret fluffy ones at about a third of the price. I think they also stock Jane Norman (though I’m too old!)

TheSecretJeven · 07/11/2019 07:09

I do like Peacocks for the odd item but my nearest one is always overheated.

Thistledew · 07/11/2019 07:16

I do think their basic t-shirts are really good- everything from strappy vest tops to long sleeves. They are made of good thick cotton that washes well and lasts for ages.

EleanorReally · 07/11/2019 07:21

awful clothes for adults, last time i looked, all polyester

crochetmonkey74 · 07/11/2019 08:40

My best ever pair of khaki ankle grazer chinos come form there and people ask me about them all the time- likewise an autumn floral dress from about 10 years ago and still going strong- their ladies pjs can be good- particularly the winter fluffy ones, but agree that generally, the quality has gone down. I don't find much in there anymore- can be good for cheap one off things like a beach cover up etc.

MagentaRocks · 07/11/2019 08:42

I like it for basics, I probably wouldn’t buy anything fancy from there but t shirts, jeggings etc. Especially good as I am losing a lot of weight so the prices aren’t bad for stuff I can wear for a couple of months and then get rid of.
