You were the voice of my childhood and you gave voices to the underdog always - particularly women.
You were an absolute legend. You discussed issues that went against the authorities, against the church, against the norm.
You were particularly strong on victims of domestic abuse.
Your legacy lives on, while you may long be forgotten. Thank you for helping women. Thank you for shining light on things that needed to be discussed.
I'm really sad to hear of your passing.

There's a live tribute Late Late tomorrow. Hope I can watch it from here.

@HeronLanyon I think he was responsible for allowing us to move forwards.

I think he actually started U2 lol. Their first performance?

He is probably known to UK viewers thanks to the early clip of Boyzone where they were dancing like eejits. Watched him every year in the Toy Show...got to stay up late to watch it, then again on Sunday. RIP Gay.

I didn’t know any of this nice stuff about Gay Byrne.

Twitter now has trending that hilarious old vt of a nascent Boyzone on his show, which is well worth a watch.

ceilihouse · 04/11/2019 18:43

It was always said if you get a music slot on the late late you were destined for stardom! Gaybo launched U2, boyzone, and many others,

Paddywhackd · 04/11/2019 18:47

'dancing like eejits' is the only way you could describe it lol

Oh the state of them!! Keith Duffy and Steven gately dancing like demented leprechauns!! How they ever became famous I'll never know!!

ChanChanChan · 04/11/2019 19:32

The Late Late Show was on Channel 4 at some point, I remember watching and enjoying Gay immensely even though we had so little of him here in the UK. I'll remember him with fondness.

ForalltheSaints · 04/11/2019 19:44

I know from friends who went back to living in Dublin how much of a part of Irish life his show was. RIP.

Sad

RIP, Gaybo. This will be the state funeral to end all state funerals. It will make Seamus Heaney’s look low-key and poorly-attended.

Cinderellasma · 04/11/2019 20:52

@BananaBooBoo that's exactly what I thought of first when I heard. Gaybo was a legend. God rest him

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/11/2019 21:08

He was lovely. This British feminist has heard of him!
