I was working today , in town at 8am and loads of people were all dressed up for the rugby heading for the pub

Just wondered if you started at 8.30 on the beer how did you survive the day ?

Or did you go back to bed at 11 Grin

Not today but during the football World Cup in 2002 (also in Japan/ South Korea) I took the day off work with some friends to watch and England game. We had pints with a fry and carried on drinking all day. I think I went to bed around tea time. Oh to be young and carefree........

bigchris · 02/11/2019 23:04

I suppose the youth can take it more ! The ones I saw were middle aged men Grin

No - but regularly start with Bucks Fizz at 8 or 9 am Christmas Day and carry on drinking Fizz all day with maybe a nap mid afternoon.

Only other time I start drinking early is going on hols. Have been known to have a pint at 7 or 8 am in the airport.

bigchris · 02/11/2019 23:13

Ah yes I always see people drinking at the airport and wonder how they're so calm about it

I know I'd lose my passport or something Grin

My husbands license didn't allow alcohol to sell until 10:30 am. He said they were full with pre orders to be sent out on the dot.

I don't know how they do it. It would mess up my whole day.

EArlier this ear I mistimed my train journeys and had to loiter in a rainy town for an hour so went into the Wetherspoons for a coffee. Bloke at the bar next to me (a builder of some sort from his clothes) was ordering a full English Breakfast - I'm with him so far - and then instead of having a mug of tea he had a pint of coke. Pretty disgusting at 9am I thought, but then when I sat down and looked around, there were several men sat at different tables with a pint of beer of one sort or another. This was a working day, in the week, with no match on and they weren't together.

I have no idea why you would get an urge for a pint of beer on an ordinary Tuesday at 9am.

I do however, get the "ignore the time, I'm here with my mates for a really big match" drink thing. Personally I'd then need to sleep it all off in the afternoon but I'm no longer young.

Losinglola · 03/11/2019 00:06

I sometimes have a glass of wine/gin after I've finished my last night shift, but I go straight to bed afterwards

Titsywoo · 03/11/2019 00:09

I used to work in a pub which was very much a locals pub. We opened at 10am on Sundays and there would be several men queuing up to get their pint. I suspect a lot were alcoholics to be honest. They were always alone. I couldn't stomach booze that early!

GooGoo52 · 03/11/2019 00:12

You are all so judgemental. Sometimes it's nice to have a drink in the morning if you're watching a big match and out with friends. Get a life!!!

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/11/2019 00:35

Yes, I started with red wine and kept going. But had been out all night anyway so didn’t really feel like drinking first thing. Have never really worked out why it’s seen as worse to drink at 10am than at 6pm when in holiday or celebrating etc - if you’re drinking the same amount then it makes no difference.

HesMyLobster · 03/11/2019 00:48

Yep! We were in the pub to get our seats and breakfast at 7am! The license was from 8am and we started on Buck's Fizz and switched to straight prosecco for the second half.
After the match we carried on chatting, catching up with friends (and drinking) Had lunch at around 1:30-2, nice walk with the dog in the afternoon once the rain had stopped then round to friends for dinner, gossiping and a couple of glasses of wine.
Just got home and it's been a pretty perfect Saturday - despite the result!

(My kids are teens by the way, dd1 away at uni, dd2 joined us for the rugby and dog walk then went out to a party tonight.
Couldn't have done it when the kids were smaller!)

ilovepixie · 03/11/2019 00:49

Always have a vodka or 2 in the airport bar after checking in. Our flight to Ibiza in the summer left at 6am. Still managed a couple of vodkas. You're not on holiday if you haven't checked into the Lagan bar!!!

Contraceptionismyfriend · 03/11/2019 00:50

@ilovepixie my husband always says the official start of his holiday is the first sip of his pint at the airport bar. At that moment he is I. Holiday mode Grin

austenozzy · 03/11/2019 00:56

Yes, I was in the local with a fry up and pint of doom bar at 8:45. Shame the game went the other way, but the atmosphere was positive throughout. Well played the bokke.

GrimalkinsCrone · 03/11/2019 00:59

I’m just so impressed that the atmosphere was very different to the aggressive and pack-like danger displayed by many football fans during their World Cup. Rugby any day!

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/11/2019 01:00

Many years ago I lived in a mining town in Australia which worked 24 hours, half the town was on night shift and pubs reflected it and opened at 6am, and people drank then.

bigchris · 03/11/2019 08:27

Oh this is not a judgemental thread at all! I'm just curious how peolle do it and don't end up in bed at 2pm with a migraine

@HesMyLobster that sounds perfect !
