Does this look like eczema, psoriasis or something else?

It’s ok DS (10) neck. He’s always had bouts of eczema but it doesn’t usually look like this. We’ve been using daktakort on it (I think that’s what it’s called, it’s an anti fungal/hydrocortisone). I’ll take him back to the doctors I think.

Bump

I'd expect psoriasis to have white scales visable/ generally be more scaly. There's also typically a family history of it, and the neck is an unusual site for it to present - I'd expect other patches.

Thankyou, that’s reassuring. It looks angrier in real life. There’s no family history. I’ll take him to the doctor on Monday, he’s starting to feel self conscious of it as kids are commenting.

Urticaria maybe?

Simonsaysitschristmas · 02/11/2019 10:01

Psoriasis doesn’t always have scales. When it first appears, starts to fade or has just been washed/scrubbed at there are no flakes.

Agree that it would be unusual to appear on the neck at first (most likely to be scalp, elbows or knees).

How long as he had it?

Duckbill794 · 02/11/2019 12:07

A couple of months, I’ve been using his normal creams on it but they’re not helping. It’s seemed too minor for a doctors appointment but I will take him.

HorridHamble · 02/11/2019 12:12

Has he had a sore throat lately? Strep throat triggered my guttate psoriasis. Either way, I agree that a visit to the gp is your best option if your usual treatment is not working.

Duckbill794 · 02/11/2019 13:09

No, we’ve all had a bit of a cold but nothing significant. I’m hoping it’s just eczema, he had a big patch of it on his back and then this on his neck. His back cleared up with the usual creams but this isn’t budging.

dontgobaconmyheart · 02/11/2019 13:31

This is what my eczema looked like when it was very inflamed as a child, in the areas where it got less air (between fingers, crook of arm, back of knees etc).

I'd ask the pharmacist OP, they can dispense hydrocortisone if you need it and assess the rash.

Duckbill794 · 02/11/2019 17:39

Ah now he’s got some dry patches between his fingers too which he’s never had before.

kerkyra · 02/11/2019 18:40

My daughter had a similar rash and it turned out to be ringworm. Easily sorted with cream.

InfiniteCurve · 02/11/2019 22:35

Go to the doctor,if he has had it that long.
It does look like eczema to me ( lifelong eczema sufferer) but really the GP would be best person to ask,and hydrocortisone is not that strong,it has never sorted my more stubborn eczema patches.
