Can you use a sonic toothbrush with a brace?

DD had braces fitted in August. At the time we were shown a video about how important brushing her teeth is. She does try to brush them well, but each time she sees the orthodontist there are comments about needing to brush more / better.

I got her to use a disclosing tablet last night and it did show that large areas were not cleaned enough. Before getting a brace, she used to use a sonic toothbrush and we had no comments from the dentist about poor brushing.

DD is hypermobile and her manual dexterity is not very good. So I don't think she is that good at brushing effectively with a manual toothbrush, no matter how hard she tries.

Is it OK to use a sonic toothbrush (she has a Phillips one) with the braces?

Ds2 has fixed braces and said his electric toothbrush was painful, so is brushing with a manual toothbrush for the duration. We do have the little tiny angled toothpick like brushes too (although I don’t think he uses them!). Good luck with finding something that suits your DD.

Should add - we have been back for multiple running repairs without it being a problem, so the worst that could happen is that she might need a repair and then you go back to manual. Could you book a quarterly appointment with the hygienist for her while the brace is on?

DD does also use the the little interdental brushes. A hygienist appointment is a good idea, thank you.

I think we might just take a risk and try the sonic brush.

My dentist specifically recommended a sonicare when I had my fixed braces on. I still use one 15 years later. (Heads have been changed ).

Dd used an electric toothbrush with her braces plus the interdental brushes

My DD is using special brace heads with our Oral B electric toothbrush, we got them on Amazon on the advice of her orthodontist, might be worth looking to see if there are Phillips ones.

I didn't use special brace heads for dd. The braces do destroy the brush heads quickly
