Can carpet shampoo save a water damaged carpet?

Carpet got wet through due to leaky roof. It’s drying out ok, but the bits where it got wet smell horrible - all damp and mouldy. I could really do with not having to replace the fecking thing. Is there any hope that a carpet shampoo (rug doctor or similar) might save it?

How long had it been wet? A rug doctor would be great for sucking out all of the water in it. When I use it I clean the carpet, go over it a couple of times to duck up excess water and then put an oil filled radiator on, windows open until it dries quite quickly. It's a bit like laundry and needs to be dried in a timely fashion.

Is it a synthetic carpet? I think you might struggle to salvage it if it's wool Sad otherwise rug doctors are brilliant!

A basic carpet shampoo may not be enough. However of you get hold of an enzyme cleaner that should take care of any mould and smells.

Thanks, I’m pretty sure it’s synthetic
