Polling stations question

30 replies

BringOnTheScience · 29/10/2019 22:55

What will happen if a regular polling station venue says "No, sorry, we're already booked for the 12th."?

Can venues be forced to be available as polling stations? Or are Portacabin hire firms about to make a fortune?!

Our head teacher tells us every time that she can not refuse to let the council use the school as a polling station. But interesting another school in the town did refuse and they magically found another venue to be used. Our head is known to be a bit of a pushover. The head at the other school is well known for getting what she wants. This is the third time this year that the school will be closed for polling.

@AmIThough
Our school is always closed for polling. Teachers still have to be in for the day at our school. I feel bad for the support staff who lose a days pay because the school is shut.

Why not portacabins if venues aren't available? Or converted buses, caravans, etc?

Does it have to be a permanent building?

Accessibility ?

You'd need somewhere to put the portacabin though and I assume that would take a few days to secure as well as make accessible.

I don't know if it has to be a permanent building (I doubt it) but there are accessibility rules. I'm sure I've seen polling stations in pubs in small places or caravans before.
