Anyone else think the smell of new clothes is getting worse?

I buy most of my clothes online and I feel like an increasing number of them are arriving with an overpowering smell of toxic goodness knows what. I know they sometimes spray clothes with stuff to stop them going mouldy in transit, but it's getting so over the top.

I almost always have to wash new clothes first before wearing them, which I'm sure was quite rare in the past. My most recent purchase was from H&M and even after washing it still smells a bit. I think I'm going to have to wash it a second time before wearing. The dress is made of cotton, so it isn't a polyester smell.

I don't have a garden or any outside space to air things.

I always wash new clothes before I wear them. I never used to but I started doing it with new baby clothes when I had my baby and now I've started doing it with my stuff too. Was wondering if this was a common thing to do or if it was just me

Yes, I’ve noticed it.
