What true crime has left you baffled?

I'm watching a show on sky crime called, "Who killed Garrett Phillips."

I'm baffled at how the police came to the conclusion that their main suspect did it. Apart from the fact, that he was on camera in his car at the school (he worked there) and the victim was also on camera 7 seconds later, nowhere near his car.

It is truly bizarre.

The Genette Tate case. I was 7 when she disappeared just a few miles away from where I lived. It was the first time I had the frightening realisation children could just go missing. So tragic, she was only 13.

The ‘Batman Rapist’ of Bath, Somerset

17 attacks on women over a decade and no one ever convicted

17 attacks provides a lot of evidence/ data/ potential witnesses so really surprised he hasn’t been caught

There are cases of young men missing in the UK for years now. Damien Nettles disappeared on the Isle of Wight in 1996. He was 16. His mother, Val, has recently published a book about the case entitled "The Boy Who Disappeared" tells a very sad story.

Another is the case of Luke Durbin who disappeared near a bus station in Ipswich in 2006. He was 19.

There are many others and this is a real problem. I mention these two because they are my friends.

MaryBear · 29/10/2019 19:31

Lindsey Jo Rimer. Went out to the local shop and was found months later in the canal. Very local to me and still no conclusion.

Littlemeadow123 · 29/10/2019 19:32

Louise Kay. A lot of evidence to suggest it was Peter Tobin - a serial killer currently rotting in prison. He was in the area at the time but moved around a lot as serial killers usually do. He used to bury his victims in his back garden. Investigators are pretty certain that they know where she is buried, but the person who owns the land refuses to have it dug up to search for a body. Seriously, if you thought for one minute that there could be a murder victim buried in the backyard why wouldn't you agree to have it dug up? Knowing that it could bring closure to a family? That a serial killer would stand trial yet again for somebody else's life he robbed? That someone could be given a decent burial in a proper grave? Plus knowing that there could be a body buried in the garden would creep me out big time. I dont think i would be able to live in the house anymore, knowing tht it is where a murder dwelt and buried his victims.

bohemia14 · 29/10/2019 19:34

@FelicityFeather That's very interesting and I agree with you. He's very charismatic, but apart from the implausible idea that it was his sister, no-one has ever come up with any other possible killer. There were many aspects of the investigation that were flawed but it does not make him innocent.

itsgettingweird · 29/10/2019 19:39

I agree in the JB case there's so much to dispute him being guilty - the unfair trial and missing evidence.
But that also that doesn't make him innocent.

HaloKitties · 29/10/2019 19:42

www.reddit.com/r/UnresolvedMysteries/comments/8nhmmw/update_on_the_missing_children_from_soul_asylums/

The Soul Asylum video aiming to raise awareness of missing children- anyone remember this?

FelicityFeather · 29/10/2019 19:42

@bohemia14 absolutely. Without doubt it was a really flawed process but it doesn't make him innocence. I mean, who else was it? His family (err the Boutfleurs? I can't quite recall name as it's been so long since I really read up on this case) clearly hated him. But with the best will in the world, it's kind of tricky to set someone up on a murder involving 5 people

Another interesting point in this case was that for many years JB had a respected journalist in his corner. Again, can't remember who off top of head. Wrote a book, articles, vocally supported him etc. Then stumbled across something and realised he'd been hoodwinked by JB.

Google Trudy Benjamin along with his name. She runs his campaign etc etc. Her link to him? Started writing to him in 2010. Good looking man she felt sorry for. She now puts herself out massively for this stranger and seems in love with him or at the least, in his thrall

TheresWaldo · 29/10/2019 19:46

I'm a middle aged woman, and find the JB case interesting as I don't think he had a fair trial either. But that was purely based on the facts of the case and not because I fancy him/feel sorry for him Hmm And where does the speculation come from that it's middle-aged women anyway? I know some people I believe to be genuinely guilty get strange people seemingly in love with them etc. The mind boggles.

Supersimkin2 · 29/10/2019 19:48

The Unmentionable MMC. So sad, poor little girl has been censored from MN as vigorously as she was censored from life.

Bodies don't vanish into thin air.

managedmis · 29/10/2019 19:54

Does anyone remember that story about the two Norwegian sisters, who were kidnapped and they killed their kidnapper then tried to run down the M1? Sounds mad, but it was true, I'll try and find it

FelicityFeather · 29/10/2019 20:04

@TheresWaldo you're missing out the crucial word in my post. And I repeated it twice in the hope it wouldn't be missed. And that word was 'generally.' That wasn't 'all middle aged women.' And I stand by that. Generally it IS middle aged women who believe this good looking and charming, erudite man to be innocent. And I idly wonder why this is.

PS I'm 47. Probs firmly in the territory

FelicityFeather · 29/10/2019 20:05

Oh and it's not speculation. You go and have a riot around social media and his fan clubs. All women. What can we draw from this?

FelicityFeather · 29/10/2019 20:05

*root not riot!

SallyCinnamon3009 · 29/10/2019 20:07

Managed to get DS to bed and OH working. Can anyone recommend a good true crime documentary on Netflix? Already watched the staircase, making a murderer, abducted in plain sight and tell me who I am

CottonSock · 29/10/2019 20:11

I could get lost in this thread. So many awful unsolved crimes.

Jill dando
MM
The family in the Alps
The Josie Russell family hammer attack, was that ever solved?
Billie jo Jenkins
And recently Nora quoirin

EmmiJay · 29/10/2019 20:11

The Kendrick Johnson crime. Its obvious who killed him and left him in a mat in the school. And yet nobody has ever been charged (to my knowledge)...? Its a heartbreaking case.

itsgettingweird · 29/10/2019 20:23

Cotton this thread also made me think of the recent NQ case. Heartbreaking.

CactusAndCacti · 29/10/2019 20:31

@SallyCinnamon3009

It is dreadfully sad, it wasn't far from where I grew up / lived and one of my parents had had contact via work with one of the boys. They and the whole family were truly let down by the whole investigation.

LaBrujaPiruja · 29/10/2019 20:37

A few Spanish cases:

Niñas de Alcàsser
Teenagers tortured, raped and murdered. Murderer identified but later disappeared and hasn’t been seen since 1993. Plenty of alternative theories, inclusive of snuff movies and sadistic politicians.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcàsser_Girls

David Guerrero
14 year old vanishes after leaving home to visit an art gallery. Not seen in 30+ years, family and friends still receiving drawings and potential hints every now and then.
www.jhmoncrieff.com/unsolved-mysteries-did-david-guerrero-guevara-draw-his-kidnapper/

Juan Pedro Martinez
A boy aged 10 disappeared after a road accident. He was travelling with his parents on his dad’s truck. Interpol said back then it was Europe’s strangest missing person case. 33 years later it is still unclear whether he was abducted or his body disintegrated in the sulphuric acid that was the cargo on his dad’s truck.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 29/10/2019 20:44

If anyone has Amazon prime. There's good docs on there.

I recommend "Alison" It is horrific but the woman involved is incredible.

I watched that "Abducted in plain sight." It is one of the most bizarre things I've watched.

@CottonSock there is a man behind bars for the Megan and Josie case, but again there are many flaws. Some people believe Levi Bellfield is actually responsible, although it's highly unlikely to be reviewed as the man they have held responsible is also a very dangerous criminal...cAnt remember his name though!!

Solihooley · 29/10/2019 21:00

Theres a documentary about Bamber on YouTube, for the pp that asked. I’m not a middle aged woman and I don’t have a particular fascination with JB himself. I think I first discovered the case when I fell down a YouTube hole and I’ve been interested ever since.
