As part of her Halloween costume i ordered dd one of these tutu type skirts from Amazon (new). It arrived today and it absolutely stinks! Sort of like fish, i presume it's some sort of plasticy packaging smell. I hung it outside all day but it still whiffs. Poor girl has her 1st high school disco coming up and can't go to it with that smell following her around!
Any tips for de-whiffing it?
Thank you!!

I ordered a flower girl dress from Amazon. Same problem. Hung it up outside for a day, and then on the outside of the wardrobe for a day or two. It helped. Hope same for yours. Or maybe hand-wash it??

Wash it?

Febreeze the fuck out of it and hang it in the fresh air.

Hang in bathroom preferably above or near a radiator or heated towel rail and put a scented candle in there too and leave for as long as possible before needed

Wash it. It'll be a mixture of the dye chemicals and the gas clothes get vacuum packed with. Totally normal. It's why you need to wash clothes before wearing because these chemicals can cause skin reactions.

You could try soaking it in a solution of bicarbonate of soda. More explanation and ideas here: www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-remove-chemical-odors-from-jeans/

I’d wash it
Air it outside to dry

Second time wash with white vinegar and air it outside

3rd day just spray with a vinegar/water mixture and air it outside

Basically, a lot of outside time

Febreeze and fresh air.

During my sons' teen years I found out that stuffing newspaper in shoes absorbs stinky feet smell. I don't know if it works on other things.

Maybe try putting it in a plastic bag with either wadded up newspaper or activated charcoal and leave it overnight?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 27/10/2019 02:07

Ziplock bag with a couple of teabags left overnight. If it absorbs the stench in DS's work boots, it will be able to cope with a bit of chemical.

BeverlyGoldbergsHairAndJumpers · 27/10/2019 04:38

Leave it in the freezer for a while.

We often have this issue with costumes (dance teacher), its something to do with the spray used to stiffen the net on some types of tutu skirts, and it has a fishy smell when it comes out of the packaging. Don't wash it, if you do the skirt will go floppy and lose the firmness of the tutu. Hang it outside if you can for a couple of hours and the smell should go, a light coating of Febreze will also help but don't soak it.

Oh thank you so much all. It's on day of hanging outside, and there's a definite improvement!

Ah, if you can’t get the fabric wet then you could put in a bag with bicarb, shake it through and leave for 24 hours or more.

Jamhandprints · 28/10/2019 05:36

Id just wash it. Ive never seen a floppy tutu. Its only a halloween costume shes not a professional ballerina.
