Advice on buying car for son

Advice needed on cars. I'm buying my son a cheap run-about for his 21st. Is it better for me to be the registered owner and registered keeper, one or both or neither? Any pros and cons welcome! Thanks!

It doesn’t matter so much who is named as the keeper on the V5, what’s more important that as he’ll be the main driver, for him to be the policy holder for the insurance, with you as a named driver(can sometimes reduce the price a wee bit) amd not insured in your name with him as a named driver

Thank you yes I will be putting the insurance in his name with me as named driver!

Him as the registered keeper so any fines go to him. If you are the registered keeper, fines will come to you and you'll have explain you weren't the one driving etc etc. Too tedious!

And surely if you are buying the car for him as a birthday present, he becomes the owner once you hand it over?

Just have him as the owner why wouldn't you it is a present his car his responsibility job done Smile

Im still the registered keeper of my old car as it had a warranty on work done on it that I lose if I sell or transfer the car. So to avoid problems Im still the keeper and pay RFL.

But my son uses it all the time and its parked at his flat, so insurance has to be in his name and Im a named driver, as is his girlfriend. It saved £8 me being a named driver but we didnt do it for that reason, wr did it because I had to drive the car up to him initially so needed to be on the insurance, and when he comes home to visit, I have used it occasionally.
