Do you like scary rollercoasters/waterslides/ghost trains?

And what's the scariest one you've been on?

I'm indifferent to rollercoasters: I take the view that if they can get through health and safety, nothing terrible can happen (yes, there was the notable exception recently, but much less likely than being injured on the roads). Ghost trains: I have yet to go on one that's truly scary. My parents told me about old ones where a man in costume would ruffle your hair, does that ever happen nowadays?

I do find some waterslides truly scary, perhaps because I was a late swimmer, especially the "space bowl" ones, where you whizz round a huge bowl, and drop through a hole in the middle. "Devil's Drop" in Paignton was the most terrifying thing I've done recently! But I can't stop myself going to these places, and putting myself through it. Shock And I believe there's a new indoor waterpark in the Midlands, where there's one of those where you stand on a trapdoor before going down, down, down...

I don't enjoy rollercoasters but I can go on them - I overthink everything, assume the worst, never been comfortable with the idea that a bar/belt is all that's stopping me from dying through a completely avoidable risk. Mostly though, I HATE getting butterflies 🤢

The scariest ones I've done are Ferrari 1 and Shambala in Salou.

Ghost trains - hell no, I'm afraid of the dark!

Water slides - meh, I've done the trap door one in Florida. I don't get the attraction at all!

PowerslidePanda · 25/10/2019 20:20

I've yet to find a rollercoaster that's too scary for me - but admittedly, I've not done many outside of the UK. The scariest one for me is Stealth is Thorpe Park - I find most rollercoasters are thrilling the first time you ride them, but less so for subsequent rides, whereas with Stealth, the acceleration delivers the thrill every time.

However, I'm quite a wuss when it comes to waterslides! They just fell less safe to me than rollercoasters do.

Ghost trains - the traditional ones aren't particularly scary, but I've been terrified (in a good way!) by some of the live action horror mazes that you walk through!

FurrySlipperBoots · 25/10/2019 20:21

Devils Drop was bloody horrible, I thought I was going to die!! I'm not one for roller coasters or scary things at all. I normally like waterslides though so I gave that one a go. I regretted it!

I love rollercoasters, haven't found any scary! Just thrilling and it's the best feeling!

I can't swim so water slides are a no.

I haven't found a scary ghost train, but I did do an interactive scare experience last year that was absolutely terrifying.
It had DP a grown man in tears.
There were all sorts of warnings about taking part and you had to sign a waiver too.
I'm glad I done it, but definitely would not do it again in a hurry!

wanderings · 25/10/2019 20:45

@PowerslidePanda Which live action maze have you been to?

I found the worst thing about Devil's Drop was having to ease myself over that ledge, straight into the steep part. Many others like that begin with a gentle slope.

PowerslidePanda · 25/10/2019 21:05

@PowerslidePanda Which live action maze have you been to?

Thorpe Park have done various ones over the years - usually around Fright Nights but I think they have a permanent one now too. I thought the best one was The Freezer, but it looks like they don't run it any more (it was themed around a psychiatric hospital and I think got some bad press for being insensitive towards mental health). It was really disorientating because there were lots of mirrors, strobe lights, fog machines and sirens - it made it hard to tell where the actors were, and you'd see one of them a few feet away, then the strobe lighting would flash and suddenly they were right in front of you!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/10/2019 21:09

I'm going to a horror maze in Glasgow tomorrow, I've never done one beforeHalloween Shock

Quartz2208 · 25/10/2019 21:15

water slides and flumes are the scariest.

Rollercoaster are I agree pretty hot on safety and its about feeling out of control in a very much controlled situation.

Ghost trains and mazes again are about being scared in a controlled environment

Waterslides you are out of control and that is it. I have friends who have broken bones and being concussed

SleepyKat · 25/10/2019 21:17

Oblivion at Alton Towers was good. And Thirteen where you’re in the dark and it “breaks down” and then suddenly drops vertically 20ft.

SleepyKat · 25/10/2019 21:18

showyourself what was the interactive scare experience?

SunshineAngel · 25/10/2019 21:24

I hate the feeling where your stomach drops - I even hate going over little bridges too fast in the car because of the feeling.

So rollercoasters and the like aren't for me! Ghost trains aren't my thing either, really.

At Alton Towers, I'm always the bag holder.. so I'm useful, at least!

ShowYourselfLucifer · 25/10/2019 22:29

@SleepyKat
House of Horror in Brentwood.

You need to sign the waiver to enter room 13. Properly horrifying.

nikkylou · 25/10/2019 22:44

I do like roller coaster and water slides! Haven't really been on any ghost trains, if I have they clearly weren't memorable.

I remember Oblivion. When you run out of air screaming down and theres a just a second where you can't breathe in again due to the drop.

Have been on one of the space bowl water slides. Only one of two occasions I remember being a little scared in deep water. Fell out the bowl into a 2 metre deep pool, can't touch the bottom and slightly disoriented so no idea where to get out!

frankie001 · 26/10/2019 02:29

m.youtube.com/watch?v=uTXdHs61hYI This one in Stockholm, called Insane. I did not go for a second ride!

frankie001 · 26/10/2019 02:32

I did the Saw maze some years ago. Effect ruined when I couldn’t find the way to next room. Cue actor dead person getting up and shouting “it’s that way!”

coastergirl · 26/10/2019 18:51

As indicated by my username, I love love LOVE rollercoasters. I have travelled quite a bit too visit different theme parks. I don't find them scary, just absolutely love the feeling of adrenaline and release they give me. I recently visited Alton Towers after a long period off to have a baby. Went straight to Wickerman and after a few seconds just felt infinitely better in so many ways. It's like my body just needs that feeling. My absolute favourite is Wodan at Europa Park in Germany.

Water slides scare me but I do go on them.

Ghost trains are meh but live action scare mazes terrify me but I love them! Sub Species at Alton Towers is incredible.

SleepyKat · 26/10/2019 19:55

Wickerman was an amazing rollercoaster. Ok, not a big scary one like Oblivion, etc but it’s my favourite.

safariboot · 26/10/2019 21:06

Yes.

One I remember setting a big impression was the Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Probably because I got on it thinking eh, this is ancient, it's gonna be pretty gentle. Then it goes down the first drop and I was like HOLY CRAP!

They knew what they were doing when they built the old woodies. Pleasure Beach is great.

MrsWicket · 26/10/2019 22:42

Rollercoasters - nope. I’ll be the person holding the coats and bags.
Water slides - used to be ok, but it’s a nope now. Went to Siam Water Park last year on holiday, and they scared the crap out if me. Didn’t even finish getting around the park before I bailed and retired to a sunbed.
Ghost trains - love ‘em Grin

Northernsoullover · 26/10/2019 22:46

Furios Baco was the worst for me. Its not the scariest in terms of big drops but I honestly didn't know what was going to happen. I could see the coaster flying above us as we walked around the park but I didn't give thought to how it started.

trilbydoll · 26/10/2019 22:48

I like rollercoasters on rails. Not ones that have you on the end of an arm just being whizzed around in circles.

Water slides I like but I don't do vertical ones, not confident enough I won't end up catapulted out - prefer to have a bit of gravity holding me in!

TreacherousPissFlap · 26/10/2019 23:33

I absolutely love them, DH and DS are heartily against them

A small tale I like to trot out every now and again features DS (aged about 6 and having had may seemingly fruitless hours at a kick boxing/self defence class) DH and a ghost train.
I watched them trundle off into the dark, DS looking suitably anxious, DH looking resigned. When they came out the other end DH was crying with laughter and DS was furious, maintaining he would never go on a ghost train ever again. Turns out a man had jumped on the back of the car and ruffled DS's hair, DS in a panic had whipped round and punched the man squarely on the jaw.
True to his word, DS has never been on a ghost train again Grin

ClientListQueen · 26/10/2019 23:39

Ghost trains yes, I like log flumes too
Rollercoasters - put off after the cat and mouse at Blackpool Grin and I can't do those or water things after a spinal op now

peachgreen · 26/10/2019 23:41

My absolute worst feeling in the world is that stomach drop you get on roller coasters. I have nightmares about it. I fell down the stairs as a baby and I wonder.if that's partly why?

I don't mind waterslides so long as they're not too steep - I feel safe in water. Ghost rides are fine - don't really get the appeal but I don't mind them.

Quartz2208 · 26/10/2019 23:50
