Do you like scary rollercoasters/waterslides/ghost trains?

And what's the scariest one you've been on?

I'm indifferent to rollercoasters: I take the view that if they can get through health and safety, nothing terrible can happen (yes, there was the notable exception recently, but much less likely than being injured on the roads). Ghost trains: I have yet to go on one that's truly scary. My parents told me about old ones where a man in costume would ruffle your hair, does that ever happen nowadays?

I do find some waterslides truly scary, perhaps because I was a late swimmer, especially the "space bowl" ones, where you whizz round a huge bowl, and drop through a hole in the middle. "Devil's Drop" in Paignton was the most terrifying thing I've done recently! But I can't stop myself going to these places, and putting myself through it. Shock And I believe there's a new indoor waterpark in the Midlands, where there's one of those where you stand on a trapdoor before going down, down, down...

I love them but can’t do the big ones anymore as I’m getting too old.

Muddlingalongalone · 26/10/2019 23:57

Love rollercoasters - fave ever were Olympic rings at Oktoberfest, and Dragon Khan at Port Aventura but had a fab time at Thorpe Park fright night
Haven't been on a proper scary waterside since I was about 12 but enjoy the tame ones with the children.
Ghost trains - nearly wet myself at Hyde Park winter wonderland & one at Oktoberfest both with people jumping out.

I love water slides, but not fast or steep drop rides. DS1 and I agree that the best are the double float, long and fun rides, with flashy lights.

Hate roller-coasters, love ghost rides.

SimplySteveRedux · 27/10/2019 00:27

Love coasters, Nemesis at Alton Towers is my all time fave.

BritishHorrorStory · 27/10/2019 00:42

My scariest ever ride was not a rollercoaster, but from a local funfair. I don’t know what I was THINKING going on this (even though I went on it three times lol). Nobody could pay me enough money to get me on it again now.

Miljah · 27/10/2019 01:13

No, I work front line NHS. That's enough adrenaline for me 😉

letsgomaths · 27/10/2019 06:43

@BritishHorrorStory I love that sort of ride; it meant I had a view of my local park that I wouldn't have otherwise (different now, with drones). I went on one like that at Winter Wonderland: I could see the whole event and all its other rollercoasters below me.

@joyfullittlehippo A hedgehog? In one of the tunnels, clinging to the hard plastic? Blimey. When I went on it, what I found scariest was the lack of enclosure at the top. It's probably less scary if you're a child, because the sides are higher around you.

Rollercoasters - love them. I don't find them scary as such though. It's more the exhilaration of riding them. The bigger the better. Mind you, the older I get, the more they can make me nauseous- I take travel sickness meds before going these days!

Water slides - not keen. I don't really like going in water much though. Hate water in my face, etc.

Ghost trains/houses - hate being scared in that way. Teen Dd loves them. Her and dh went to the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal last year and had a fab time being scared all night. I stayed in the hotel next door with a cocktail or two reading a book - bliss! Grin

babbi · 27/10/2019 07:04

Love all of them .. the crazier the better 😂
I am a nutter !!
I guess you’d call me a thrill junkie ... I thrive on this stuff .... I travel quite a bit and am always looking for something daft to do wherever I land 🙄
Recently did the longest zip slide in North America ....

I know I’m probably too old for this nonsense but meantime ....

Alltheprettyseahorses · 27/10/2019 07:30

Roller coasters - not really. I don't like the wind blowing in my face. I've passed the time when I can do most fairground rides now anyway. I need a sit down after going on the teacups tbh. Heights are okay and so is the twister for some reason but not much else.

Water slides - nah, I worry about people pissing themselves or worse.

Ghost trains - actually I can still manage a good ghost train. I've never been in a horror maze but I'd like to. Surely they're quite dangerous for the actors though? There must be a lot of people who react to perceived threat by giving them a punch in the gob, as PP's son did.

Verily1 · 27/10/2019 07:35

My favourites have been-
Nemesis and 13 at Alton towers, also loved the thunder looper in its day.
The Big Dipper at the pleasure beach- icon there is also good
Dragon challenge and the hulk at universal in Orlando.
Some of the non- rollercoasters there are also amazing eg the mummy and the transformers ride

Flumes- I cant remember specific ones- I was disappointed by the water park at Alton towers. Does anyone else remember the outdoor water park in Scarborough? Atlantis I think?

I have the added fear now that I’m a bit bigger that I won’t fit on rides/ break them Blush

coastergirl · 27/10/2019 08:31

@Northernsoullover Furious Baco is awful! My friends call it Furious Backache. It hurts so much. Never again. I do absolutely love Shambhala there though.

I’ve not been to the Alton towers water park, but I have been to stoke water world not far away. I like the black hole flume there best - it’s pitch black inside.

BlobbyTheLump · 27/10/2019 18:34

@Quartz2208 it was! Definitely not for anyone with a nervous disposition.
All I could keep saying was 'ITS NOT REAL' - DP was terrified too, even though he styled it out, I saw the fear Halloween Wink

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/10/2019 19:43

Rollercoasters... I feel nothing. No fear or excitement.
Waterslides... I find fun.

Ghost trains... I have a sort of phobia of ghosts. Although logically I know they aren't real, I freak at ghost stories, films etc. I cannot control it. I do not go on ghost trains.

isabellerossignol · 27/10/2019 19:45

Waterslides and ghost trains yes.

But a roller-coaster? Even if you offered me a million pounds I don't know if I could do it.

BritishHorrorStory · 27/10/2019 20:47

Have they repainted it? I liked it when it was actually pitch black. When the paint had started to scratch off (haven't been since the mid 00's, to be fair) and there were patchy bits of light shining through it made me feel really unsettled for some reason and I would close my eyes all the way through!

Speaking of Waterworld, did you used to visit when the rapids were really fast and brutal? I literally struggled to get out of them in the earlier days and it would take me at least ten attempts minimum to escape them, with older family members attempting to grab my arm and try and pull me out as I passed them waiting at the exit. Sometimes the force of the water would pull them back in with me and we had to start again lol. Nearer the last times I visited they were much, much slower. I preferred the crazy version, especially as a kid lol. And what was with all the random hair bobbles on the roof of the rapids?

letsgomaths · 27/10/2019 21:03

@BritishHorrorStory It was only last year that I visited, and just the once. Is the "rapids" the one which goes uphill? It probably wasn't crazy when I went. Black hole was definitely black! I went in summer, and the lifeguards were cooking under the glass roof, hiding under big umbrellas.

Kinda Ka in New Jersey. It's the fastest and second highest rollercoaster in the world.
139m high and goes from 0 to 128mph in 3.5 seconds Shock
Impossible to be indifferent or bruise free after.

SagelyNodding · 27/10/2019 21:26

I adore rollercoasters, but don't often get a chance to go on them. Weirdly I feel totally safe on them!
Waterslides are fun, but some of the bigger ones can really hurt (especially when compared to when I was younger and lighter!) I bruised my coccyx quite badly a couple of summers ago just by hitting the water with my butt Grin
I'm terrified of ghost trains despite being level-headed and non woo...

BritishHorrorStory · 27/10/2019 21:26

@letsgomaths No the rapid are literally rapids where (you used to) go round at breakneck speeds. On two seperate occasions as a child I ended up underwater, unable to breathe, because I'd sank to the bottom and had a full grown adult standing on top of me (wasn't their fault, you literally were getting dragged round in a constant circle, unable to make contact with the floor) The last time I went, around 2004-2005, they were slow and you had to swim/walk around them.

Just went on Youtube, this is the current rapids:

This was the rapids I remember (and no, the video is not sped up, that's how fast they were):

Letsgomaths · 27/10/2019 21:31

@BritishHorrorStory Ah. No, the rapids were quite tame when I went. That sounds scary!
