V Sentimental bespoke ring gone wrong

Really looking for some advice here. I posted before about looking for a meaningful way to spend my inheritance from my parents death (£2k) I decided on having a ring made and carefully picking out ideas with my DD who would one day inherit the ring. All good so far... I provided a picture/video of a ring that I wanted made they sent a CAD picture which looked perfect. However once made in metal it was not like the CAD picture, it was a lighter, dainty version with bright coloured stones which I had been clear I did not want. The customer service at this point is clearly not good, delays, poor communication, late night texts etc... I am very clear at this point that I am not in the hands of the professional and personal service I had thought and no longer trust them to deliver the ring I had hoped for. I speak about changes being made and once I’m in front of the boss it is clear I will not be getting my deposit back and if I want changes I need to pay more.

The whole experience has been so upsetting. I feel lost what to do next. I paid £400 cash deposit. Boss shrugged off my offer to meet half way with giving half my deposit back and further shrugged off my suggestion of a formal complaint. I wrote one anyway and haven’t even received a response.

Do I accept it is £400 just lost? Or is there anything in my power to fight it further? WWYD?

Thanks for replies. It’s from a small shop in Hatton garden.

I got my engagement ring from a shop there and had a brilliant experience. This though has been shocking.

Thanks for the link I’m so cross I handed over cash. Wish I could have used the card refund. I wondered about small claims too. Just so upset that even a complaints email is just simply ignored.

Are they members of a professional/trade association you could speak to for advice?

thanks for the suggestion I have had a look. Interestingly no...

It sounds like you can use the consumer goods act to claim your money back. The item does not meet your original plans so is not what you ordered. Do you have a written contract with them ? Does that state anything ?

wondertime · 25/10/2019 21:49

Have checked receipt and seen they actually belong to the national association of jewellers.

Sorry forgot to say I have a receipt with order details which I assumed acted as the contract?

Was it Holts by any chance? I had a horrific experience with them. Eventually got my money back by standing in the shop and refusing to leave until they refunded me.

I second small claims as ling as you have the drawings and agreements so you can prove it's not as agreed.

So sorry to hear you also had a shitty experience Peachgreen.Love that you stood your ground like that! I had my DS with me on the last visit. They keep us there for 1.5hrs while they looked for stones they had apparently ordered for me but no one could find...

I did realise from my last visit that the guy that sold my ring was sitting working in the jewellers next door. So there’s every chance several shops are perhaps connected?
